Elena:
Does anybody know good site related to timetable and prices for the buses going between cities inside Germany? To the best of my knowledge, there is no such website. Bus companies may or may not publish time tables on their own website (if they have one!). Intercity traffic is usually done by train. Local connections by bus (and usually, departure times are signposted at bus stops, although the bus company in my rural area doesn't bother to signpost them anymore). -- Erick |

There are very few routes between cities served by bus as the state operated trains don't want any competition. One of the few is between Berlin and Hamburg. Bus companies such as Eurolines do offer transportation to places outside of Germany. Otherwise, buses are used to reach places not served by trains. For train travel, there is a bewildering number of options. Some of the better ones are Lander group (2-5 people) day train tickets which for about 30€ you can ride all trains and public transportation for a day within one German Lander (state). There are two restrictions, no travel before 9AM on a weekday (on Sat, Sun and holidays tickets are valid from midnight to 3AM the next day), and no fast trains (ICs, ECs, or ICEs) can be used. Another excellent option is the Schoenes Wochende group day train ticket which on Saturdays and Sundays covers all of Gerrmany, this time for about 35€, with similar restrictions. However, local transpöortation may or may not be covered depending on locality. There are also local transportation networks all over German that give low prices for travel within them, including the regional trains within them. George |

Trains aren't state operated now, and their not wanting any competition could hardly make it go away. But the bus companies need licences, which they don't get, if they want do parallel service to existing train lines. It's a law from the 1930s to protect state investment in train infrastructure.
