Direct and frequent coaches between the two airports is probably the best
and most convenient solution

If not you can always travel over London with a combination of train-tube or
train-tube-train.

There is a direct coach (bus) service. (or maybe two)

Normaly about 1.5 hours but allow 2.5 hours or a bit more during peak times.

You could do the Gatwick express to Victoria, tube or taxi to Paddington,
then the Heathrow express to Heathrow. It would be quicker when there is a
queue for the coach and/or lots of traffic on the M25, but it is more
expensive and less convienient.

Ask about waiting times and journey times when you buy the coach ticket at
the airport then decide.

I should think that once one was in the Underground system at
Victoria Station it would be simplest, and possibly fastest
overall, to take the District Line westerly and switch over to
the Picadilly Line at any of several stations, thence directly to
Heathrow. It would certainly save some schlepping of luggage.

Yes, best would be Hammersmith, with cross-platform connection to the
Piccadilly Line which then runs fast as far as Acton.

Except for the coach idea, everyone is suggesting expensive complicated
routes.

The best way would be to get a train from Gatwick to Clapham Junction,
then change to a Feltham train. The train journey should take about
an hour all together http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/planmyjourney and
from Feltham you need to take the connecting bus to Heathrow
http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk/transportlinks/heathrow.htm, another
20 minutes.

You'll need to use an underpass to get between platforms at Clapham
Junction, and an over pass to get the the bus at Feltham, but compared
to negotiating the Underground, it should be easy.

You may be able to buy a ticket for the entire route at Gatwick, but
otherwise, you will be able to get one to feltham, and just buy a ticket
for the bus when you board.

This is supposed to be the simpler route??
