I'm a traveler, but not a diver.

My wife and I are going to Grand Cayman Island this weekend. We are
not divers, allthough we do enjoy snorkelling. Can anyone give us
some suggestions for things to do out of the water? We usually rent a
car and like to see everything. We are what you would call "active
travellers". We don't want to spend all day sitting on the beach.
What can we do?

If you have a car, then definitely take the drive out (out and up) to
Rum Point. It's a beautiful beach, no cost to get on. Lots of chairs
available. Great little snack shack right there, with maybe the very
best strawberry daiquiris and conch fritters I've ever had.

You sound very much like my wife and I.. "Active Travelers".
I'd suggest you take a look at my trip report from a couple of years ago

You can goto Hell. From there you can visit the sea turtle center.
There's a war memorial that looks like a white church in town. It
commemorates the island's war with King George of England. Tanzanite
jewelry used to be really reasonable. Not now, but if you have a dinner
reservation in Georgetown it can't hurt to go window shopping. Who
knows, if you look enough you might find a reasonably priced piece.

You can goto Hell.

Hell is located in West Bay, which is a north of 7 mile beach.
There's a (free) boardwalk behind the post office to see the stone
formation; figure 15 minutes unless you spend a lot of time browsing
the gift shops. Do plan to mail your postcards from here (there is a
post office)...and consider taking along the address for your local
priest/pastor of your local church to send him a postcard from Hell.

From there you can visit the sea turtle center.

The Turtle Farm is also up north in West Bay, proverbially "around the
corner" from Hell, but essentially along the coast. There is an
admission charge here (it has gotten relatively expensive), and you
can plan to spend an hour here fairly easily. It has moved since I
was there last (pre-IVAN); it is supposedly now at Boatswain's Beach.

Do be aware that the Farm is ... a farm. Its not a purely altruistic
turtle breeding program to have them all released back into the
wild.

Not far out of Grand Cayman along the South coast road is the Pedro
Saint James, a historic "Castle". Sorry, haven't toured it to say
what its like.

IIRC, there's a small structure with a couple of ancient cannon on it
in this area. Not sure if this is "Gun Square" and/or "Slave Wall /
Drummond's Wall", plus I also understand that there's a cave in this
area too (probably has an admission fee).



Continuing east, there's also "blowholes" along the South coast road
(free). Watch for the staircase on the oceanside and a very small
parking area on the left. Not sure if this is at Breakers, at Gun
Bay...or possibly both? There's also a similar formation on Cayman
Brac, on the beach walk to First Cay.

There's a cross-island road at Frank Sound that goes to the north side
of the island (which is also the route to Rum Point). Around halfway
across on the right (east) side is the side road that leads down to
the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park (admission). The trees will block
the wind, so expect it to be hot & humid, plus a chance for
mosquitos. Take hats, sunscreen & bug repellant.
