Traditionally, formal is tie and tails
semi-formal is a tuxedo
informal is a jacket and tie
casual is open collar shirt

We just got back from the Celebrity Horizon to Bermuda. They had two
formal nights while at sea with many tuxedoes and almost everyone in at
least a dark suit. There was also one semi-formal (they call it informal)
night while in port and I saw maybe 5 men in jackets at the main seating.

I was wondering if semi-formal nights still existed on mainstream cruise
lines. Last time I saw it was a couple years ago on Holland America. I
know Princess seems to have dropped it altogether, it's usually either
formal or smart casual.

Thus spake "Cruisemon" :

semi-formal is a tuxedo
informal is a jacket and tie
casual is open collar shirt

Where does "black tie optional" fit into the above? I've heard the
phrase in the past (not much, lately). I would guess it's
semi-formal.

Semi-formal now seems to mean clean blue jeans and a blazer, sans tie.
