Agree. Bamboo island area, north of Phi Phi, is excellent.

Food/Shopping - No good local Thai food in Ao Nang (you do NOT use
ketchup to make Pad Thai).

I think that Pad Thai is not native to this area.

We had very good food (in January 2002) at Had Sai restaurant at the
beginning of Nopphrattara beach, just west of Ao Nang. That beach is
fun, too. At low tide you can walk about 500 meters straight and the
water is only knee high.
