Science in Rome - Renaissance
I'm looking for the "scientific" Rome - museums, historic sites (for
example the home of great scientists) etc. The themes are Science and Renaissance, so a coupling between those would be the best. Any suggestions? |

Any suggestions? I can think of 2 little known historical sites that might interest you. You will probably walk right by this church if you visit the Pantheon, it's ~50m away. http://www.akat.dk/rom-billeder/imag...a/SIMG0512.JPG The white facade bldg is the church 'Santa Maria sopra Minerva'. Just to the left of the Bernini marble elephant with the small Egyptian oblisk on its back see that large marble doorframe. In 1633 Galileo walked thru that door into the 'Headquarters of the Dominicans' and to his Inquisition. A 1680 Alchemist site is in the 'Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II', it is near the *large* ancient brick fountain ruins (easy to find). The site is a doorframe, inscriptions and emblem with an Alchemist's prescription for making gold. If you crack the code, remember me! The site is called the 'Porta Magica' aka 'Porta Ermetica'. Photo http://romeartlover.tripod.com/Vasi49f5.jpg Closer view of inscriptions on doorframe http://freeweb.supereva.com/luoghide...ortamagica.gif I have visited this site but never researched it, I'm more into ancient history and just found this info on a google search so I don't know how accurate it is. www.levity.com/alchemy/queen_christina.html Regards, Walter ...And Paradise Was Lost...like teardrops in the rain... |

Any suggestions? I don't know of any general science museums in Rome. And to be honest, I think that Rome during the Renaissance was not a hotbed of scientific discovery. There is a Museum of Copernican Astronomy, which I just found in a google search, but it seems not to be open to the general public. Here is their fax number, if you want to inqui +39 06/35347802 I also found a Museum of the History of Medicine, housed at the University "La Sapienza". Here is their web site: http://www.histmed.it/museo/museo.htm -- Barbara Vaughan My email address is my first initial followed by my surname at libero dot it I answer travel questions only in the newsgroup |

Science in Rome - Renaissance
Perhaps this will be of interest
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giordano_Bruno It's just a late 19thC statue of Giordano Bruno erected in the 'Campo dei Fiori' on the spot where he was burned at the stake by the Inquisition in 1600. Regards, Walter ...And Paradise Was Lost...like teardrops in the rain... |
