Top sheets go back to the days when in UK we had blanket(s).

Must have been your own doing...I have lived in the US 75+ years and always
had a top and bottom sheet for my bed, even during the depression years.
In fact, sets of sheets always come with a top and fitted sheet plus two
pillow cases.
