Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas
Just returned last Sat. from a week on the Oasis. Does it live up to
the hype? It sure does! A floating city of over 6,000 people yet it never seemed crowded. First I must say that I'm not into cruising but my dtr. and son-in-law are and they talked me into going with them just for the "experience." Our stateroom overlooked Central Park. This area is on deck 8. There are real trees, flowers and bushes plus chairs and benches and old fashioned lamp posts. It is all open to the sky for natural sunlight. They even have taped bird calls and chirps! I looked down on this from deck 12 while I had breakfast on the balcony. Lovely. Only one complaint. We were to have dinner one night at the Seafood Shack on the Boardwalk. We sat down to wait in Adirondack chairs in front and soon found we had soot on our clothes and arms. It was all over the deck. The dining area here was on a roof covered porch so that remained clean. We ate there and it was well worth the inconvenience. A great tasting dinner, dessert included for only $11.00. We had dinner in the main dining room the rest of the time. There are 3 dining rooms on 3 decks and we had an assigned table for 4 with my dtr. and son-in-law. They ate another night at Chops, an upscale restaurant that costs $25.00 per person. We ate breakfast and lunch at the Windjammer Buffet. Good food there too but crowded. This was free. There's a Pizza Parlor (Sorrentos) that gives out free pizza and a donut shop that does he same. There's a 24 hr. place on deck 5 in case you get the munchies in the middle of the night. That's free too. The ship is absolutely beautiful with modern design and lots of plexiglass so the views are never blocked. We saw an Ice Skating show that was first class, a broadway show "Hairspray" and an Aqua show with Olympic high divers. There were many other shows that we just couldn't make. A Jazz Bar, a couple of comedy clubs and lots more if you have the stamina. The Solarium is for adults only. It has it's own pool and hot tubs. The teenagers have deck 14 to themselves for basketball, etc. The little tots have a few shallow pools. Lounge chairs by the pool areas fill up fast. You cannot stake them out for the day either (that's good) Monitors are walking around and if a chair is vacant for more than a half hour towels, etc. are taken away and the chair given to someone else. There's a good deal of walking on that ship and at 80 I tired quickly. Fortunately there was always a place to sit and rest. There were seniors in wheel chairs and on those motorized ones too. This is very long. But then the Oasis is the largest cruise ship in the world. It can't be described in a few words. Any questions? |

Have you been on the Celebrity Solstice or the Equinox? The Oasis reminded me a lot of the Voyager and Freedom class ships, but some areas reminded me of the Solstice, such as the wave pattern in the cabins and the decor of the Solarium. Looking at the ship from land, the back of the ship was not very attractive, but the inside of the Oasis made up for that. Glad you enjoyed your cruise. Becca |

No Goomba, I didn't find it cheesy. In fact I recall smiling when I
heard the birds and I was alone at the time. I thought it was a nice touch. |

I too was on board this ship in the beginning, Have a question for you
Did you find that the cwentral park rooms were noisy? When we were on there was alot of noise that went on late at night- music playing.... Maybe they corrected it. Was wondering from someone that just got off your thoughts. This ship is a beauty BUT it is Big and not real good for older folks. You can get lost! LOL Sue |

As I mentioned Becca, I'm not a cruising person.
I've only been on two other cruises and that was in the 70's and 80's. Carolyn |

Sue, I didn't find Central Park at all noisy at night so that has
changed since you were on it. The noise and action ie. bands, singers, dancers, conga lines were on the Prominade deck at night. We watched it all live on our room TV as they videotaped it and even reran it later. It only took a couple of days to find our way around the ship. Those wall maps were great. They worked like an ATM machine. Just tap on the screen and it shows you where you are and how to get to where ever you want to go. Elevators are plentiful at both ends of the ship. My companion went to bed at ten so I would go to the library and read till midnight. I only sleep 5 or 6 hrs. a night. I was up at 5 and out on the balcony watching the cleaning people at work. They did a wonderful job of keeping the ship clean with the exception of that soot all over on the boardwalk. We suspected it come from the stacks when they blew the horns when leaving port. |

Some people like fake flowers too... doesn't make 'em in good taste though, eh? I found the fake bird noises annoying, repetitive, predictable and cheapening to the relaxing experience. Silence would have been preferable to me. |
