Baltimore SUN Letter to the Editor

Mayor Martin O'Moron SHOULD BE REAL PROUD!

Struggling city offers no reason to 'Believe'

Is there anything in Baltimore left to "Believe" in?

A former police chief has admitted he was a crook while heading up the
Baltimore Police Department. The Baltimore public schools have almost
certainly been led by crooks or by administrators too incompetent to
realize that the financial floor beneath them was crumbling.

Ravens All-Pro Jamal Lewis is under federal indictment for allegedly
participating in a scheme to distribute drugs. Now, Mayor Martin
O'Malley is poised to drain the city's rainy day fund until there is
virtually nothing left.

It seems of late that Baltimore can gain national notoriety only for
the disasters that take place here, which in recent years have
included a rampant murder rate, a potentially devastating train fire
in a downtown tunnel and, most recently, the tragic deaths of a young
couple about to become engaged, a little boy, and a mother and
daughter while taking a ride on a water taxi.

I long for the days when I was a young boy sitting in the wooden
bleacher seats of Memorial Stadium with my father watching my heroes,
Brooks Robinson and Jim Palmer, play. Year after year, there was
always the hope of another championship. I long for the days when
Mayor William Donald Schaefer began to revitalize the Inner Harbor and
on a hot summer day rang the bell opening the plaza to throngs of
joyful citizens.

If the politicians and community leaders haven't noticed, the spirit
of this city is draining away. Baltimoreans need to be given a reason
to hope again.

Right now the future looks bleaker than ever.
