Port Everglades Expands!
Hi Everyone,
I received this press release from Port Everglades and thought it would be of interest. If you have missed any of my news' postings, they are available on my web site. Best regards, Ray LIGHTHOUSE TRAVEL 800-719-9917 or 805-566-3905 http://www.lighthousetravel.com PORT EVERGLADES INVESTS TODAY FOR TOMORROW’S CRUISE INDUSTRY PORT EVERGLADES, Fla. (October 26, 2004) -- Broward County’s Port Everglades is expanding with more than $80 million worth of infrastructure improvements to keep up with the ever-expanding cruise industry. “Cruise ships are getting bigger and so must we,” says Port Everglades Director Ken Krauter. “We are making a financial commitment towards preparing for the future because we know the cruise industry will continue to expand in South Florida and the Caribbean.” Port Everglades is already one of the world’s biggest home ports, hosting more than 4 million passengers in fiscal year 2004 (Oct. 1, 2003 through Sept. 30, 2004). The port set a world record in December 2003 of accommodating 41,800 passengers and 15 cruise ships in a single day. With the new generation of mega-ships, cruise passenger terminals are being expanded to handle more people and their baggage, parking spaces are being added to accommodate the domestic drive market and security enhancements are underway to ensure safety for the growing number of guests moving through Port Everglades. BIGGER TERMINALS The existing baggage hall in Passenger Terminal 2, located in the northern section of Port Everglades, is being expanded from 25,000 square feet to 50,000 square feet to accommodate larger cruise ships. The estimated completion date is in the summer of 2005 at a cost of $2.5 million. The baggage hall in Passenger Terminal 4 will be expanded by 50,000 square feet from its current size of 26,000 square feet to create a 76,000 square foot baggage hall and waiting area. The Terminal 4 project is scheduled for completion during 2006/2007 at a cost of $4.0 million. Passenger Terminal 21, which was renovated and expanded in 2001, will undergo a second expansion to enlarge its baggage hall from 19,000 square feet to 34,000 square feet. This project is slated for completion in 2006 at a cost of $1.75 million. Port Everglades will construct its 12 th full-time cruise terminal with the reconfiguration of Terminal 27 and the extension of the berth to handle megaships. The estimated completion of the Passenger Terminal 27 project is scheduled for 2007/2008 at an estimated cost of $16.4 million. MORE PARKING & IMPROVED TRAFFIC FLOW Additional traffic ramps to the Northport Garage, which serves Passenger Terminals 1, 2 and 4 as well as the Broward County Convention Center, will allow for faster, safer and more efficient traffic flow. The project is near completion at a cost of $3.6 million. A second cruise parking garage in Northport will provide an additional 550 parking spaces in the first phase. The second phase will allow for an additional 1,250 spaces, for a total of 1,800. The first phase of the project is slated to be complete by the end of 2006 at a cost of $10.6 million. ENHANCED SECURITY Security enhancements have been an essential component of recent construction at Port Everglades. When completed a total of approximately $44.8 million in infrastructure improvements will contribute to safeguarding the port and its assets from terrorist acts, stolen property and the importation of illegal contraband. During the past year, security projects have included completion of a new Security Operations Center, Access Control Points at Eller Drive, McIntosh Road and Eisenhower Boulevard, and port-wide fencing. Construction on a fourth Access Control Point at Spangler Boulevard (S.R. 84) is underway. These Access Control Points separate the main flow of trucks carrying containerized cargo from cruise passengers heading to the passenger terminals, improving traffic flow for cruise vacationers. GROWING HOME PORT “We have experienced phenomenal growth in recent years as South Florida has become the hub of the cruise industry,” said Carlos Buqueras, Director of Trade Development for Port Everglades. “We are projecting continued strong growth for the foreseeable future, thanks to the planned expansion of the Port’s facilities, growth of low-fare carriers at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and the prominence of Broward County as a popular visitor destination.” Nearly 50 cruise ships and 20 cruise lines call at Port Everglades, including: Carnival Cruise Lines, Celebrity Cruises, Costa Cruise Lines, Crystal Cruises, Cunard Line, Discovery Cruise Line, Discovery World Cruises, Hapag-Lloyd, Holland America Line, Imperial Majesty Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Princess Cruises, Radisson Seven Seas Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Seabourn Cruise Line, SeaEscape Cruises, Silversea Cruises, St. Tropez and Windstar Cruises. The Port's ever-expanding fleet of cruise ships provides guests with an array of cruise vacation choices from the popular Greater Fort Lauderdale area including everything from sampler-size day cruises to around-the-world cruises. Details on the latest cruise offerings are available on Internet at www.broward.org/port. |
