Default American Express Travel Medical Insurance

Because Medicare doesn't cover out of US travel and we don't want to cut
into the lifetime limit of our supplement policy unless absolutely necessary
(which has a 20% co pay anyhow) , we usually take Travelex trip insurance
because the medical is primary, and offers a pre-existing conditions waver.

So we were pleased to get a letter from American Express offering out of US
medical coverage at less than $200 annually for both of us (including
emergency evacuation which we already have thru our credit card)...until I
called them to check on the fine print. ( Note: we are NY State residents
and I haven't read the policy in detail.)

But: I was told that this is SECONDARY medical coverage which means
American Express pays nothing (except the 20%?) until we use up our other
policy. And, the is NO pre-existing condition waver which means that,
theoretically, if someone ever had or was treated for a condition that
re-occurred while traveling, American Express could pay nothing. So
basically, the policy seems completely useless.

Thoughts?

Thanks for the heads-up.

Another example of some marketing genius (sic) trying to pad his resume at
the expense of the average citizen.

Ahhh....capitalism in action!

Considering how inexpensive medical care is outside of the US, maybe
Medicare should start paying. It would save the taxpaers some money.
