Packing for trip

No not diapers, underpants. *I am surprise that people are not more aware of these... actually quite comfortable I've never heard of them. But if they are comfortable I could see how they might be useful for someone on a long trip who doesn't want to do laundry. What's *the brand name and how much do they cost? James I am really surprised that this is such a secret. My wife would not travel without them. One definitely advantage is that they pack very small, comes in packages of 8 I think. Unfortunately for me I can't find a size that fits me. I don't remember the brand name, but they are usually available from drug stores. We bought ours in HK where they are everywhere, including 7/11 stores. |

Packing for trip
"Lawrence Akutagawa" wrote in message ... "Marsha" wrote in message ... Lawrence Akutagawa wrote: "Marsha" wrote in message ... I'm taking a 9-day tour in September around Yosemite-Sierra and would really like to get everything into a carry-on. All clothing will be very casual. I plan on layering what I wear on the plane, hand washing some things in the hotels, and throwing away some cheap, but good, clothing bought at garage sales. Any other suggestions? You have an excellent start. Make sure you have a warm sweater plus a windbreaker as well as some long pants - it can get downright cold in those mountains at night and early morning. Check. Garage sales will be far and few between in the immediate Yosemite/Sierra area. The clothing has already been bought here. I plan on throwing it away there, to make room for anything bought on the trip, hence making it unnecessary to ship anything home, unless I buy something really big (not likely). Pick up your toiletries at one of the drug stores here - we have Longs, Walgreen, and Rite-Aide. This is a guided tour: http://preview.tinyurl.com/6524hg The hotels have hair dryers and all bath supplies, except toothbrush and toothpaste. On your way back, ship back to yourself everything you want to keep. Now, that would defeat the purpose of not having to pay for carry-on luggage, unless shipping is free :-) And don't overlook the east Sierras. Plenty to see there that you'll find nowhere else. If at all interested in nature photography, don't miss the Mountain Light gallery in Bishop, established by Galen Rowell. It is well worth even a 15-20 minute visit. And if you do get to the east Sierras, the cheapest gas will be either at the indian casino just north of Bishop or at the Giggle Springs gas station in Bishop. Thank you very much for the info. The tour's itinerary looks pretty good. I like to take a guided tour first, if possible. Then, upon returning, I have a realistic idea of where to go and how much time it takes. This looks like something I'd want to do again on my own. [chuckle] my bad - I completely missed on the guided tour aspect. I had assumed this to be a roll-your-own tour. The itinerary looks great. At Donner Lake - I assume you will stopping at the state park - make a point to see the large low plaque on the ground listing the members of the various families of the Donner party. It is not far from the main museum building. I always marvel at the size of those families. Too bad no time to visit the Mountain Light Gallery. It is in an old bank building on the left (east) side of hwy 395 at one of the few intersections with a traffic light in Bishop. And you skip Bodie! Hopefully, the visit to Mono Lake will include the tufa formations on the south shore of the lake. I do take exception to the sequoias being the oldest trees - largest, yes; oldest, no. The oldest non-clonal trees are the bristlecones in the White Mountains about an hour or so outside of Bishop, as per http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oldest_tree and http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/inyo/recreat.../history.shtml . If you decide to take a short hike of your own in Yosemite rather than take one of the indicated tours, I recommend the hike from Happy Isles to Vernal Falls. Most folks taking this hike go as far as the bridge from which you can view at a distance Vernal Falls. Be different - go across the bridge, then follow the Mist Trail (the dirt one, not the paved John Muir trail) another 50 or so yards upstream to where you'll see a rough trail leading down to the river to a large rock (Franklin rock). The reward for this extra effort is a classic view of the falls not available from that bridge, as per http://www.summitpost.org/view_objec...bject_id=95064 . Do be careful while on the rock - the wet areas are downright slippery. And carry water. Dunno that average low being 55 degrees. I guess that may make sense considering all nine days of the tour. But be advised that the average September low at Mammoth Lakes is 44 degrees ( http://www.intellicast.com/Local/His...ation=USCA0661 ) . No real need for any rain gear. One of the delightful things about this part of the world is that except for a rare quick moving thunderstorm in the mountains you can expect very good weather. Just in case, you just might consider packing one of those very lightweight plastic ponchos with a hood. Have a wonderful time and don't forget to tell us of your experience. If interested in Donner Party and early life in the Sierras, one of the interesting museums is the city of Truckee Museum. |
