I couldn't see it working in the USA; apart from the political differences, the cost would be astronomical. Did it actually "work" in Australia? Did Australian criminals dutifully line up and turn in their guns? Or were guns only confiscated from the law-abiding? -- Bert Hyman St. Paul, MN |

Apparently you can't argue against doing it for any reasons other than nuts & bolts. That should mean something to you. How could you reliably collect the many illegal firearms in the hands of violent criminals? |

I don't see it working here either. I don't know if you're aware, but Illinois has some of the strictest gun laws in the country. But does Illinois have any way of preventing gun importation from neighbouring states? |

Smith & Wesson is British owned and they seem determined to commit corporate suicide by getting their products banned. Other firearms manufacturers have also been said to be soft on gun bans. The reason is in part that the Federal government and the state governments have some pretty big hammers--they buy a _lot_ of guns and lack of cooperation can mean the difference between one manufacturer and another getting a contract. -- -- --John to email, dial "usenet" and validate (was jclarke at eye bee em dot net) |

I used to have the figures at hand. Do some googling. I'm very happy to live here and not the-) Cheers, Alan, Australia -- http://loraltravel.blogspot.com/ latest: Slovenia |

And the crims probably still have their guns but consider how many massacres these days are by known criminals and how many are by people with no criminal record? Was the guy in Illinois a prior crim? The guys in Columbine? Cheers, Alan, Australia -- http://loraltravel.blogspot.com/ latest: Slovenia |
