When to Buy a Ticket
I'm watching prices for a flight between LAX and YVR in May. The
prices keep jumping all around. I don't know whether to wait for some flight that has a higher rate that I want to go down to where a flight I don't want is or to buy now because I can get flights at the lowest rate I've seen them in three weeks. Are pieces lower or higher usually as the date approaches for a flight? Or, is this completely unpredictable and I should buy what I can now? Thanks. |

I see $269 fares on Westjet, which are pretty good, so if one of those works for you, buy it. Air Canada has fairly frequent fare sales, so I'd sign up for their email newsletter and see if that route goes on sale. R's, John |

I haven't flown that route, but assuming Westjet flies it then in general I'd recommend Westjet over all others unless there is a significant price gap (and that's extremely rare) If you're looking at Westjet, what I'd suggest would be to watch daily for the flight you want to either drop in price (a seat sale -- Watch their marketing if you prefer, but checking the flight daily is safer), or for the "only 'x' seats left" marker to appear at which point I'd book it if it's an acceptable price since the price will go up once that group of seats runs out. All that being said, about 2-3 weeks out the prices will start going up and you can't count on a sale (although I think I've gotten lucky more often than not, but my schedules are fairly flexible too), so at 3 weeks out I'd book either way if I really wanted to be there. If the price drops more than $50 you can always call Westjet, they will refund the entire amount minus $50 to a voucher and allow you to re-book under the then-current price. |

When to Buy a Ticket
Thanks for all the replies. I hae one more question. Westjet? Never
heard of it. Is it going to be better price-wise but in other respects minimal service? Or, is this a good airline in areas beyond price? Thanks. |

All Boeing planes, most of them newer model 737's . . . seat-back, leather seats, TV, etc. Excellent service as well as prices. We prefer Westjet to Air Canada by a wide margain, and we'd recommend it highly. |

Modern fleet, generally comfortable seats, etc. They're a "discount" airline, but they're very flexible (flat $50 change fee starting 24 hours after booking, with the current flight being turned into a transferable good-as-cash voucher), almost always friendly staff, less obnoxious fees (although they finally started charging for a second checked bag) Water, coffee, juice and pop are still free onboard. So they're cheap, but they're not a "discount airline" Personally I'd pay more to fly Westjet, but since they're virtually always cheaper (on the routes that they fly, anyway) it's never been a factor. |

Well, I booked a flight today on Westjet, though I can't say that having to pay an extra fee for my plain old seat seemed like a discount, and almost $400 from LAX to YVR seems like a lot to me, but most other airlines (except Alaska Air) were more. Alaska just didn't have the schedule I wanted. |
