TR: Pacific Duality Pt. 8: A Return to Nausea (9/2/11)
-The buffet meal provided was actually excellent. I wasn't super
impressed with the umu cooked pig and chicken: I guess I'm happy white people invented the grill? I don't know. It wasn't actively bad, I just feel like the smokiness and seasoning was basically not there for me. The various veggie and meat sides though were pretty astonishing. The greens made from the taro plant and using coconut milk were outstanding. Like some weird alternate universe version of soul food. I find the parallel evolution of grilling/barbecuing fascinating. So many totally disparate cultures have quasi-independently hit on very similar ideas, even if they often go about the exact way very differently depending on local conditions. I guess when you're faced with the same chemistry problem, the same solutions work everywhere. Also how every culture that simultaneously had chickens and oil hit on pretty much the same fried chicken recipe. -- |\-/| 0 0 =(o)= -Wolf |
