Navigator was just there and from their report..I learned they dropped
off 100 pallets of food/water this trip. I received the same feedback
about locals being grateful for the ships calls. Next trip,
incidentally, Navigator is reputed to be dropping another 163 pallets
of food/water and this time, meds. It's a good thing!!!!

A letter from Adam Goldstein explains why they returned and has the
following excerpt:

All of our ships calling into Labadee® are transporting much needed
supplies to Haiti, amounting to over 120 pallets in the first week
alone and more is on the way. Our lounge chairs have even become
useful as makeshift hospital beds to help treat the injured. Royal
Caribbean® has pledged at least $2 million in humanitarian relief
including 100% of the net revenue generated during calls to Labadee®.
Additionally, guests onboard our ships will have the ability to donate
to Food for the Poor's Haiti Relief Fund through their onboard
accounts if they elect to do so. In response to numerous suggestions
regarding guest participation in the recovery efforts, volunteers on
some ships calling into Labadee® can join us in assembling backpacks
for kids which we will be donating to the local community.

I received that letter in e-mail. I thought it was nicely written and a
good idea they sent it to their customers.

I did get a chuckle that after Royal Caribbean and Labadee they put
the ® symbol.

The ® symbol is no-doubt a legal

required.

I don't think it's legally required, but it is a good practice.

To keep this vaguely on topic, those of us who have visited Rome on a
cruise have seen many examples of an early "trademark": SPQR, dating
from before the Common Era.

It is not legally required. Damages can still be collected. The reason
to use it is that the collection of damages could be delayed if the
infringer claims ignorance of the trademark. They might start at the
date the trade mark owner sends a cease and desist letter instead of
earlier.

I for one did not know Labadee was trademarked. That Royal Caribbean
was trademarked of course, but I thought of Labadee as a place name in
Haiti. That mark in the letter was what made me aware that the name was
trademarked.

It is legally required to keep the trademark. Kleenex, cellophane,
among many others were pulled because they had entered common language.
I worked in newspapers long enough to know about the letters you'd get
if you forgot and the full page ads in Editor & Publisher about Xerox
being spelled with two Rs.

I don't remember all the ins and outs of Kleenex becoming a generic term for
"facial tissue", but Kimberly Clark fought hard for its trademark. I don't
recall that use of the symbol was involved. They did suddenly start
incorporating the name "Kleenex" with other of their products as a major
thrust of their effort. It was a classic law school and business law topic
for years. It doesn't seem fair when you make a product that is so good and
so successful that big brother takes the name away from you.

The very letter you refer to from Adam Goldstein was circulated via this
