Anyone recommend a quick way to fly from Frankfurt, Germany to
Lugano,
Switzerland? Do I have to go through Munich, or is there another
way?

Kind of suprised - Swiss/Luftansa offer flights from Frankfurt to
Lugano
via Zurich (early morning and evening)

Typically around 7h Frankfurt Hbf-Lugano with a change of train in
Basel.
Air connections to Lugano are mostly with a change in Zürich and
you can
do the trip in around 3h with Swiss or LH/Swiss, add on time for
transport

So today I learn that Lugano has an international airport.

Called Lugano-Agno, if looking for railway connections
better check for Agno

Have not been there for a while, but nice place, landing and
take-off kind of interesting (valley is not really large).
I prefer[ed] flight from Zurich to Agno to the ride by train,
as due to the short flight distance planes stay at relatively
low altitude offering great view on the Alps

Agno to Lugano takes some 20 minutes by train .... plus
some walking time to the railway station. Better by shuttle
bus if available. More at http://www.lugano-airport.ch/

Is it nowadays necessary to change ?
Back in the times I was living in Darmstadt, in most cases I was able to
get a through train to Milano (which stopped in Lugano). In a couple of
cases I changed in Mannheim (but I guess it was my point of origin which
was out of the way, and the train I changed to probably came from Ffm.

The night train NZ301 is running directly Frankfurt Hbf-Lugano. Otherwise I
can't see a single throughrunning day train.

Day EC trains from Switzerland to Italy now run under the Cisalpino
logo, even loco-hauled ones.

Only for passengers to and from Italy. You can use them without
reservation and with normal tickets for journeys in Switzerland; those
running via the Simplon tunnel also to/from Domodossola.

Sorry, yes, I should have made that clear when I posted.

How does that work? Dedicated coaches for domestic Swiss traffic?
Presumably seats aren't paper labelled, otherwise international
passengers won't be able to buy (global priced) tickets after the train
has started from its origin point. So someone say going from Geneva to
Brig may well find himself having to move seats if someone comes along
say at Lausanne travelling to Milan.

I think it's dedicated coaches for those travelling to Italy. IME, the
majority of pax on these trains are making journeys to or from Swiss
stations.

I travelled on one recently, from Arth Goldau to Milan. I bought the
ticket at Zug, and the clerk there issued me two separate tickets; one
to Arth Goldau, and a globally priced one from there to Milan. I
assume that, if I'd been travelling to Lugano, I would have received a
single ticket.
