Default Day Trips

Granddaughter, 18, is going to be in the UK (from the US) next month and is
looking for suggestions for day, or perhaps overnight, trips (coach or
train) out of Manchester or Widnes (visiting family in both places). Any
suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Some ideas:

There are many interesting museums in Manchester
The Lake Disrtict (Windermere),
The Peak District (Buxton, Bakewell, Edale, Hope, Castleton)
City of Chester
Liverpool (Albert Docks, Beatles Museum)
Blackpool
North Wales (Conwy, Caernarfon, Snowdonia)
Lots of Individual historic houses.

etc

And apart from the cost, there's no other reason that makes
a day trip to London impossible. 2 and a half hours each way
gives about 8-9 hours in the city for a long day. You will need
to arrange cheap tickets booked in advance if she wants to
do this.

I'd add the Cathedrals too.

Blackpool
North Wales (Conwy, Caernarfon, Snowdonia)

I second all the above suggestions. You may as well add York too, as it
takes a similar amount of time to get there by train as it does, say,
Windermere or Conwy. For that matter, a daytrip to the _Yorkshire_ coast
is possible. I've done it to Scarborough. A trip to Conwy by train could
be combined with a visit to Llandudno, not for the town itself (pleasant
enough if past its prime seaside resort) but the train trip up the Great
Orme is good fun, weather permitting.

To tell the truth, once you add even just 2 hours train trip either way,
there's a huge number of places you can go. Manchester is very central,
and is well served by train, high speed and local services.

She should go to London, and not just a day trip. 2 or 3 minimum.
That said, she can also consider Bath and Stratford depending upon
her personal interests. Truth is, she might consider getting up
to Scotland. None of these should be day trips though, although
I'm extremely biased on the subject of day trips.

There are plenty of places nearer to Manchester worth visiting than London, Bath
or Stratford. York for example. The North of England isn't a cultural
wilderness.

But are they "worth more"? An 18 year old going to the UK for the
first time for a month. What priority order do you place the
various options?

An 18 year old travelling alone will probably get a lot more from a visit to
the nightclubs of Leeds, Birmingham and Newcastle than trolling around
museums and art galleries all day.

Having said that, York is spectacular and doesn't need a guide book as
there's something interesting and historical on just about every street
corner within the walls.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Barbeques on fire by the chalets past the castle headland
I watched the gift shops glitter in the darkness off the Newborough gate
All these moments will be lost in time, like icecream on the beach
Time for tea.

Micklegate is well known as a place for drunken teenage debauchery.

York had, I'm not sure if it still has, more pubs per head of the
population than any other town in England.

But it's not exactly what you'd call 'the home of a stylish night out',
unlike either Leeds or Birmingham.

Mind you, compared to a night out in the United States away from New York I
imagine it'll be quite stylish enough.

I mean, I remember shocking an American friend by taking them for a
Saturday night out in Scarborough.

It was just too sophisticated...

If it is just for a day trip I would go to York.

York is a wonderful mediaeval city with extensive city walls,
mediaeval streets (e.g. The Shambles) and a cathedral - York Minster.

As it is a bit far for day trippers from London, it's unlikely to be
as inundated with visitors as Bath or Stratford, both of which are on
the London Day-Trip circuit.

"Prioritising" day trip venues (or tourist sights in general) is very
difficult. There's no easy way of saying that one is "better" than the
other. Bath is (for instance) a city which developed in the 18th/early
19th century and has, as a result, a certain architectural unity due
to local architects adopting the "Palladian" style - a type of
architecture based on the work of the Italian Andrea Palladio, who in
turn had re-interpreted Roman originals.

Stratford is a small town with many mediaeval features - but its
raison d'etre as a tourist venue is the fact that it was Shakespeare's
birthplace.

Stratford isn't "better" than Bath which isn't "better" than York.
They're all worth seeing - but for different reasons.

Personally, I'd spend time in places which are great but easy to
reach, rather than sitting on my ass/arse for hours on buses/trains
just to say "Hey, I've been to XYZ."

Ah, yes, the famous "Micklegate Run".

Darren, Wayne, Sharon and Tracy wear thin and revealing costumes, and
proceed along York's main streets, getting ****ed at each pub they
inundate.Foul language and "yoof" culture (or Chav Culture, whichever
you prefer) prevails.

Avoid central York on weekend evenings.
