Expedia overcharges for room reservations -

I booked a room through expedia.com, and afterwards checked the
hotel's web site to get the phone number, and I discovered that the
advertised room rate was $102.00/night. Expedia charged my 132.00/
night. I called Expedia and was informed that they would not provide
the room at the actual rate.

Avoid this company. They also have a cancellation policy for a motel
room, 1 day in advance, that forfeits one nights stay.


Altogether a surprisingly disreputable outfit.

Hotels can sell their rooms for less than these folks 'cuz they do not
need to pay themselves a commission. Expedia is no different than
any retail-travel service which sells rooms at published/rack rates
and pockets the commission paid by the hotels. It always pays to
check the hotel's website, since you can often find web-rates for
less. I only use Expedia/Travelocity/Orbitz to identify prospects.

Yep. There was a time before hotels were net savvy where an agregator like
Expedia or Priceline could negotiate a block rate and sell rooms for less than
the hotels would sell for. The hotels quickly realized that this was not in
their best interests and now you almost always get the best deal available
directly from the hotel.

Different suppliers charge different rates.

Expedia advertised the 'guaranteed cheapest rate' ... it did not occur
to me that they would jack up the standard advertised rate by 30%.

He said he CALLED the hotel.

My mistake. He didn't say he called, but it would be nice to know how he
found a lower rate. Perhaps the rate was no in effect when he booked the
Expedia rate.
Perhaps he can contact Expedia and tell them he found a lower rate.

The guarantee is NOT an absolute claim they will give you the lowest
price when booked. It's not like you can claim they are cheating you
because they don't know all of the rates that are being offered everywhere.
