Alexander McColl Smith, in a book of the "44 Scotland Street" series, mentioned a parlor game, to come up with a famous Belgian who was not called Leopold. You know, I can't think of one :-) And I can't think of any who were called Leopold. Anyway, here they a http://www.famousbelgians.net/alphabetical.htm Apart from Tin Tin, which I don't think counts, I've never heard of any of them! (OK, I lied) Well, I am (somewhat) enlightened. I did recognize 11 of them :-) Apart from Leo Baekeland, Audrey Hepburn and Ilya Prigogine, the others are musicians or painters, some of whom I might maintain were actually Dutch. I actually recognised Hepburn (though I had absolutely no idea she was Belgian), Jacques Rogge, 4 sportsmen/women and two recording artists, though I don't regard either of the latter two as being the slightest bit famous even within their profession and certainly not outside it. tim |

Wow, I'm doing better! I recognized Eddie Merckx, prior to Lance Armstrong the record holder for number of Tour-de-France wins. He was given the title of "Count" by the king; somehow "counted" does not sound as good as "knighted". He has another distinction. To contest the one hour Olympic cycling record, you have to ride a replica of the holy bicycle that Eddy used in 1972 and distances set after that date by innovative designs have been cancelled. -- James Silverton Potomac, Maryland Email, with obvious alterations: not.jim.silverton.at.verizon.not |
