Not normally. Ask before you try to get on board, and dump them if you
get resistance. I have carried fruit onboard many times, but that was
"then".
"Now", you are subject to suspicion.

Didn't have any problem when I did this. They seemed a bit surprised that I
asked.

OTOH, if it was LHR I was asking at, I'm not sure that I'd have got the same
answer

Much different issue when doing it internationally, as fresh fruits are
usually prohibited. The airlines do not care.

Should you use the mailblocks package and expect a response from me,
you should preauthorize the dissensoftware.com domain.

I very rarely bother responding to challenge/response systems,
especially those from irresponsible companies.

I have found that I can take it on the plane, to eat, but I might well not
be able
to take it into the next country...

Leaving aside any security issues, there is normally a prohibition
against taking fresh food from one country to another, and in the USA,
with some foods) sometimes even from one state to another.

Do you mean transcontinentally, there are no restriction intra-EU

as fresh fruits are
usually prohibited.

When I went to SA I was asked to bring back some "strange" food.

Before I left, I asked a at customs what I was allowed to bring back, Fruit
and Veg was the only food item allowed

Especially fresh produce of any kind. I'm not sure it is still true,
driving interstate in the U.S., but they used to maintain inspection
checkpoints for all motor traffic entering California (and other states
crucial to the nation's fresh fruit and vegetable supply). IIRC, the
Mediterranean fruit fly was the targeted culprit, the last time I drove
cross-country - but that was many years ago.
