And on top of all that, it's a national park so they want
to preserve the valley the way it is.

Yeah, but wouldn't be nice have a Dairy Queen or
Baskin-Robbin's smack-dab in the middle. [R]

They do, sort of. There's a resot right in the middle of the park, with a
very nice air-conditioned restaurant, and you can get your ice cream there.
I was there in July, and it's ery nice. Although there's something totally
wrong with eating ice cream in the middle of a desert when the temperature
outdoors is 122F.

This dry valley is under the level of the sea. It would be possible to
built a
canal between Los Angeles and this valley in order to bring the Pacific
ocean's
water into this valley, so it will become a new Salt Lake and we'll be
able to
build a new Salt Lake City. Many tourists have died when they tried to
cross
this valley, so it would be better to get it less dry with a big Lake.

Techically, it's not a valley, but a graben, which is an area of the crust
that sunken. Valleys are cut by rivers or glaciers, while grabens are just
sunken crust.

Why not just mount a giant bathtub spigot on one end of it, like right below
Dante's View, and then run the water until it fills up? There's plenty of
salt available there, so you could just run tap water. Of course, like tubs
at home, overflows are to be avoided.

If any tourist died while trying to cross DV, they did so because they were
stupid.

No! They're franchises that, as all others, ought to be avoided.
'Sides, consuming high-sugar stuff in such heat is rather
counter-productive.

DA}Is it crazy to cross Death Valley in July?

Yes!
If you do, take plenty of water to drink and some for the car,
too. Although there are water tanks for the car along the road, best
have some of your own.
Check with locals about tire inflation. Fill your gas tank
before entering the Panamints.
Don't worry about rattle snakes. They have enough sense to go
elsewhere during the Summer. You should!
Notify the National Park Service or some local authority of
your crossing. Give them an estimate of your arrival at Lathrop
Wells(?) and call to report your safe arrival.

DA}How far is it across the valley to Vegas?

Not very. But it's very beautiful and interesting and might take
longer than you expect. However, you're not likely to get out of the
car in July. If you have a dog with you, get some protective shoes.

All the above is in case you're stupid enough to actually do it. I
implore you to not go between May Day and Hallowe'en.

Come to think of it, you're not the first to ask this question. Come
to think of it, haven't heard again from any of those who have . . .

Polaris2002 filted:

There are ways to transform salt water into drinkable water. So the tourists of
the Death Valley wouldn't die of thirst if they had a salt lake.

The more likely outcome is that in the long run the Great Mojave Lake or
whatever you'd want to call it would be subject to massive evaporation, leaving
behind the minerals, and it'd be *more* salty than the ocean....

The Salton Sea has been mentioned upthread...anybody know about the Spanish
galleon that's supposed to be submerged out there?...r

That'd be kinda hard seeing that the Salton Sea
didnt exist before 1905.

A far simpler and cheaper solution would just be to place
containers of emergency water every mile or so along the
hiking trails that tourists take.

Since there havent been many tourist deaths in DV the
issue is moot. The reality is you'd have to work really
hard to die of thirst in DV, its a pretty busy spot.
