Default kangaroos @ large

hi,
I'm coming to Oz Apr/May this year with my wife, planning to travel
from Sydney up to Cairns. We've got 3 weeks to spend and want to mix
diving with outback experience (we plan to rent a 4WD and rumble a bit
around qld).
but the key priority is seeing wild kangaroos in nature, at large - you
know, a herd of them running across our road at sunset or something )
anyhow, much as I know it's not really 100% certain to see live, wild
kangaroos while travelling Oz. I can be sure of seeing some dead ones
on side of the road but that's not quite what I'm looking for.

so - any advice for travelling kangaroo lovers? how can we improve our
chances?
where should we drive? where should we stay? how big - as your personal
guess - is a chance of seeing a wild kangoo? or a bunch of them?

cheers,
artur

Just visit any golf course in the early morn (dawn)!! You see - the buggers
are largely nocturnal. But!! They LOVE golf courses; or indeed any other
environment where they can be guaranteed consistent green grass!

And! Yes! That includes city and urban golf courses (except those in the
very city centre - as Victoria Park in Brisbane).

Kangaroos are far from threatened - they're everywhere - but they sleep all
day - as far from the madding crowd, and traffic - as practicable.

I can drive you 10 mins out of Brisbane city and you can see as many `roos
as ya want. Not tame enough to hand feed but if ya hit it hard enough
witheth front of teh 4x4 you may get time to pat its head before it comes
round and claws ya arm off.

Kooralbyn springs to mind....... as does Stanthorpe. Nearly wiped one out
with a wayward, six inches above ground drive a couple of years back. The
roo didn't even flinch when my ball whacked its nose at lightening speed.

Don't even need to go that far. There's a big mob on the
paddocks outside Wacol prison.

Include Lightning Ridge (opal mining town) in northern NSW
in your wanders, then drive via Dirinbandi to St George and
Miles.

I'd be very surprised if you don't see plenty of roos on
that drive - and lots of cows on the road as well because
the road goes through unfenced cattle stations.

Just make sure you don't see one up close through the
windscreen.

First of all the correct term for a group of kangaroos is a "troop" but if
you are in OZ then a "mob" is just as good.

The camping grounds at the Warrumbungle Mountains NP (near Coonabarabran
NSW) is a sure spot at dawn and dusk.

The caravan park at the entrance to Crania Gorge NP near Monto in Qld is
another sure spot.

Kangaroos belong to a group called macropods (large footed). They range in
size from "mouse" right up to "Too bloody big to grapple with".

Just remember, the ones you see in the wild are just that - wild. Keep
clear.

And that goes for any other fauna, especially koalas.

Thats the exact mob that I was thinking about. Almost hit one today, left a
lovely set of skid marks down the road. Little buggers they are, Im sure
they know what they are doing.
