Default West Coast Road Trip advice

For those that replied here (long ago), I haven't forgotten ...

Yeah, I DID get a new job - but have since left there and planning this trip again (now that work is out of the way) - so I'm
reviewing previous notes .. planning maybe this spring ... any updates / input appreciated.

Reading the posts in this thread was like a sentimental journey. In 1970
I drove a sportscar from Santa Barbara, CA, to Olympia, WA, hugging the
coastline and bypassing the metro areas. I was thirsty for scenery and I
got it.

There are parts of that trip that seemed a bit tedious. Around Eureka,
CA, I began to wonder if I'd run out of scenery. I drove to the beach
where I encountered the most magnificent pile of driftwood that one
could possibly imagine. Tossed onto the beach by countless storms, every
shape and twisted form as far as one could see. In scruffy old Eureka I
found an image that I'll always remember.

I spent 10 days enroute to the Olympic Peninsula and another three days
circling that wonderful spot.

There's actually too much to see, if one in in a hurry. Little villages
along the way are inviting. One sometimes sees scenes where movies were
filmed. One promises oneself that they will return someday, but I
personally have returned only to Big Sur and to the Olympic Peninsula.

I'd like to travel the west coast and cover a scenic route along the water.

I'd like to go from ~Seattle to San Francisco and looking for locals /
others who can advise me on specifics, such as:

When to do it ? Is the view better in mid-late spring/fall with trees changing color , for example ? Any seasonal activities
to be sure to do ? How long to allow ? Of course that would depend on what I'll see / where I'll stop. So, what's to see/avoid
along the way. How much time to spend at each stop?
I've done SF- SD a few times so this trip will end in SF for now .
