Anti-malaria medication in Ethiopia
Hi,
I am going to Ethiopia in February for about two weeks. I am planning to visit the following places: Addis Ababa Bahir Dar Gonder Axum Mekelle Adigrat Lalibela Do you think I need to take any anti-malaria meds ? Out of these places only Bahir Dar seems to be below 2000m and I am going to stay there for two/three days. Did anyone do a trip with similar itinerary? What are your experiences? Of course I am going to use Deet but I wonder if anti-malaria "sweets" are necessary in my case. Thanks a lot Adam |

Thanks a lot Adam Adam, As a regular Ethiopian traveller I can say you that you don't need anti-malaria meds for these places and as you said only for Bahir Dar (Tana area) eventually meds is suggested (altough we never used it there for a few days, but that's up to you) Is it safe travelling in the North now?? (political situation seems unstable at this moment) ================================== Lou Andreoli Human, wildlife & nature photographer http://www.homepages.hetnet.nl/~louine ================================== |

We are going to monitor the situation and if it does not calm down, we'll have to change the itinerary. Let's say the list cited by me is plan A. We also have plan B: Arba Minch, Jinka, Mago NP, Turmi, Omorate, Konso, Arbaminch, Erbore, Dora. I saw on your website you've been to most of these places. What did you take against malaria ? As regards bed nets, do you think it is reasonable to take one with oneself ? I was thinking about buying one in AA upon arrival (do not want to bring it from Europe as I guess they have better choice there). and taking it with myself surely if we chose the "southern" itinerary but also up to the north. What do you think ? Regards, Adam |

We took Malarone for our Southern journey. As regards bed nets, do you think it is reasonable to take one with oneself ? Absolutely, take them with you from your own country as I should not know where you can buy them in AA (for the North it is not nessessary) I was thinking about buying one in AA upon arrival (do not want to bring it from Europe as I guess they have better choice there). and taking it with myself surely if we chose the "southern" itinerary but also up to the north. What do you think ? Regards, Adam I guess you will not travel on your own as backpacker or so as this is very difficult in Ethiopia(difficult country for travelling as backpacker). Best way is hire a car with driver on forehand (NOT hire a car whithout driver!!) or travel organized (small groups) If you need more info let me know -- ================================== Lou Andreoli Human, wildlife & nature photographer http://www.homepages.hetnet.nl/~louine ================================== |

Thanks. Adam I travelled the historical tour 2005 and used Lariam. I did not get malaria, but instead bad liver values and had that for about 3 months before is was back to normal again. Today I would try to find some other suitable anti-malaria drug. /Nisse -- Remove the obvious part before replying by mail please! |

I heard stories about Lariam and I want to avoid it. There are other meds sutiable for this region. I heard doxycycline is one of them and Lou mentioned Malarone. I am taking both into consideration. Adam I would suggest malarone over doxy as doxy needs to be taken 2 weeks before and 6 weeks after travelling to risk areas. malarone is 1 week prior and 2 weeks post. As well photosensitivity can be an issue with doxy, and who wants to have their vacation ruined by the sun... Grant Kinsley (MD) |

Grant Kinsley (MD) Hi Grant, I'm not a doctor, so I don't speak with any authority on the subject, but AFAIK, current medical opinion in South Africa regarding doxy is that it can be taken 24 hours prior to entering a malarial area, and need only be taken for 21 days after leaving the area. I experience sun sensitivity on doxy, but that's insignifacnt compared with the side effects of mefliam. I haven't tried malarone yet. I've found doxy easy to tolerate, VERY cheap, and also protects me agains other nasties like tick bite fever etc. Also, doxy is easy to replace in most countries if you happen to lose your luggage. ;-) Cheers, Marc |

Grant Kinsley (MD) Hi Grant, I'm not a doctor, so I don't speak with any authority on the subject, but AFAIK, current medical opinion in South Africa regarding doxy is that it can be taken 24 hours prior to entering a malarial area, and need only be taken for 21 days after leaving the area. that schedule can be used as well, however malaria parasites can outlive the cycle and delayed infection can occur months later. The important thing to remember about all antimalarials is that none of them are effective against all stages of the life cycle and malaria can occur even if prophylaxis is taken. My advice is to remember if one gets sick 4 or 6 months after a trip to make sure you let the doctor know if you have been in a malaria endemic area. I experience sun sensitivity on doxy, but that's insignifacnt compared with the side effects of mefliam. I haven't tried malarone yet. I've found doxy easy to tolerate, VERY cheap, and also protects me agains other nasties like tick bite fever etc. Also, doxy is easy to replace in most countries if you happen to lose your luggage. ;-) Both true, the only caveat to that is that some people are much more sun sensitive with doxy. I wouldn't want to risk my vacation to that SE, the not inconsiderable extra expense of malarone is worth it compared to the cost of the vacation involved. BTW, I saw Kingsley Holgate's series just played on PBS over here. I didn't get to see it, but thought you might be interested. Best, Grant Cheers, Marc |
