2nd bag charges for wheelchairs or other mobility aids (ADA "reasonableaccomodation")

Hi,

now that some airlines are charging for a 2nd piece of checked luggage
I'm wondering if they charge for transport of a "handicapped mobility
aid" (wheelchair, folding bike, other odd stuff).

in the past US carriers would often start with giving me some grief...
wanting me to deflate tires, box it (it's got a carrier bag), etc...
then as soon as I mention I'm handicapped (I've got a steel brace) and
it's my mobility aid they'd get reasonable because they've got to make a
'reasonable accommodation' under the ADA.

(flying out of Amsterdam it's NEVER a problem)

so what are they doing know about people who need to travel with a
wheelchair etc?

Saturn does... I know when I bought my SWP in '99 they offered 500$ in
modifications/accessories/etc for handicapped buyers.

How would ADA apply?

ADA specifically exampts airlines.

then it must be a huge example of them all being nice to the
handicapped... they provide wheelchairs in airports, porters to push
them, special slim chairs to get people onto plains, etc.

Just curious, but how is a folding bike a mobility aid for the
handicapped?

Hi,

it allows someone who can't walk but a few steps but can ride a way to
get around much easier than a wheelchair, they're narrower, can go
up/down steps (small numbers of steps), handle rough streets/curbs
better than a chair, etc.

I've been using one (a brompton) for years now...

you see I was run over (not just hit, run over) by a car 30 years ago
and my right leg is paralyzed... I can only walk a few steps and that is
only because I have a steel brace to hold my ankle/foot in place...
but... you don't pedal a bicycle with the muscles in your legs... you
use the muscles in your BUTT which move your legs (yea I know racers
have toe clips so they can use their calf muscles for a little more
oomph but that doesn't apply here)... so with 1 good leg I can still get
around with my brompton... and when I say go to dinner... I fold it up
(it folds quite small) and slide it UNDER my table... at the Rijksmuseum
in Amsterdam or the WW-II museum in New Orleans I checked it like I
would my daypack and use their wheelchairs in the museums... the Comic
Art museum in SF let me use it inside... as do the Police in Centraal
Station in Amsterdam ("it's normally not allowed, but for you it's
allowed" and he gives me his card if any other officers stopped me)...
the Keukenhoff Gardens let me use it no problem (though they do supply
wheelchairs too).

As someone who has used a chair it beets them hands down.

of the ADA.
