Default Gombe Stream NP

Has anyone been there? I've heard it can be difficult to get there because
the only access is via boat. I'll probably be coming from the Arusha area.

Thanks

Yes, I was there, but a long time ago.

I went to Kigoma and took a boat to Gombe Stream. (No problem to
find and hire one, and it was not expensive.) Since I don't
think that anybody has built a road into the reserve, it's
probably still like that.

Enjoy the boat ride and go swimming later. Lake Tanganyika is
deep and crystal-clear.

I was there in '02. Chartering a boat through the one travel agency
will cost you an arm and a leg. Going to directly to the locals cost
$100 when I did it. Maybe less if you have better negotiating skills.
$100 isn't exactly cheap but but it's not out of line considering that
the entry fee to Gombe Stream itself is $100/day/person.

One thing to keep in mind is that there is no road, at least not a good
one between Arusha and Kigoma. Easiest way, aside from chartering a
plane, is to take a train from Dar Es Salaam.
