Best appetizer was the goat cheese soufflé on Constellation (I still have
the recipe if anyone wants it... it was in a CC magazine). *

Tom, can you post it here? They served goat cheese souffle on the
Liberty of the Seas this summer, and I've tried several recipes since--
none have been quite right! But it is truly wonderful.

While some seem to like the brunch at Palo's (Disney Cruise Line) better
than dinner, we can't make that comparison. We were scheduled for brunch as
well, but cancelled when the opportunity presented itself for us to attend a
special event with Richard Sherman, a true Disney Legend. The brothers,
Richard and Robert Sherman were the famous song-writing team who worked
directly for Walt Disney himself, and wrote everything from It's a Small
World to all the Mary Poppins songs. Likewise, we are not too much in just
trying to compare restaurants, for that just encourages disappointment and
usually end up simply comparing apples to oranges. All in all though, we
were still quite please with dinner at Pola.

As to other specialty restaurants on other cruises/lines, we go so far back
in that aspect, it is hard to remember. In fact, when we first started
cruising, there were no specialty restaurants at all - just early and late
dining. This was even before NCL coined the phrase 'Freestyle Dining".
However, on every cruise since this concept started, we make it a habit of
at least one specialty restaurant during the cruise - sometimes more.

Yet, at least to me, not one could compare to Pola. This is not to say Pola
is and should be everyone's favorite. but it is for me, and that's what was
originally asked.

Happy sailing...

Most memorable meals onboard:
Many years ago, while in the old Island Princess for a 10 day trans
Pacific cruise we were seated at the Deputy Captain's table for all 10
days. The service and food were better than any before or since and we
were also invited to a private cocktail party in his suite. The MaitreDe
and Head Waiter were our servers.

Because of our many cruises on princess, we have often been invited to a
special Captain's luncheon on ome cruises. Those, too, are very special.

Susette,

IIRC, the head waiter informed me there were so many orders for the duck
they had to prepare more.

And to catch more duck in the middle of the ocean on a moving ship is
really tough ...

To answer your question I (re)submit two excerpts from long ago
reviews - both of the s/s Norway. I think it is quite telling (either
about me or about the state of things aboard ships recently, IMHO)
that I can't recall any meal that has been so remarkable since then.
True, I've had some really terrific individual entrees here and there.
And some dinners are memorable for the company of my my tablemate(s).
But no single meal stands out based on cuisine. When re-reading what I
wrote below well over a decade ago I was reminded that an entire
cruise can be transformed by what the chefs prepare in the kitchen.

From s/s Norway Transatlantic - 1996 (first return to France since
becoming the Norway in 1980):

"The first of seven special dinners are served. Two guest French
Chefs
and a pastry Chef join NCL's executive chef in preparing recreations
of
various seven course dinners served aboard the famous French liners
throughout the century. Dinners had names like the Charlie Chaplin
dinner,
the Cary Grant dinner, the Red Dinner (everything was red or had red
in
the name)."

I'll amend the above to include that among the dinners were
recreations of menus created by Georges Auguste Escoffier.
http://www.escoffier-society.com/Bio.html

From s/s Norway to Norway - Just the Facts - 1998:

" The cuisine reminded me of some of the best restaurants in Soho,
NYC. I didn't
recognize any of the dishes as coming from the Caribbean menu. These
were
brand new menus that were tailored for the provisions able to be
acquired
during the cruise. For instance, fresh salmon dominated the menu while
in
Norway. Salmon was poached, grilled, baked and always mouth watering.
No need
to chew, it simply melted. The beef was also excellent. Fillets were
prepared
in a variety of ways throughout the cruise. This was a very
sophisticated
menu with interesting side dishes. The food was uniformly superb, the
very
best I have experienced on S/S Norway, and just about any other ship
for that
matter."

I recall one entree in particular on this cruise which was a standout
among standouts: Norwegian Reindeer steak.

That's my dilemma also - I love the bread pudding and the bread in
general in the Lido on HAL. Also really love the cold fruit soups.
But no single meal stands out.

The best meals we had were on the old "DORIC" They served the meals
family style, and all waiters and servers wore white gloves when
serving, and you chose what side dishes you wanted from the tray he
carried, things have really changed on a cruise ship.
Now all they do is try to nickle and dime you.

Meatloaf, mashed potatoes with gravy and steamed Brussels' sprouts for lunch
buffet. With a glass of Ripple snuck on board, on the Grand Princess.

Actually, memorable meals have been lunch in Sabatini's on the Grand
Princess and dinner in the Crown Grill on the Crown Princess.

Overall though, I think there has only been one meal I was really
disappointed with in over 30 cruises.

If you want to see weird breakfast meals check out John Besh's New
Orleans LÜKE ...
Shrimp and Grits with poached eggs and a Champagne Peach Puree
cocktail ... for instance ...

Weird is in the eyes of the beholder my friend. Growing up in New
Orleans, spent my first 27 of my 61 yrs there, I've had shrimp and
grits with a soft fried egg hundreds off times. Often make it as a
brunch for guest here in Ohio and before in Virginia.

No big deal for anyone from the gulf coast or the Low Country of SC or
the Georgia coast.

Hi! My name is Deborah; my husband and I are veteran cruisers. One of the
most memorable meals that I remember was on Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines.
It was a buffet lunch, and it was so nice to have some fresh fruit, cheese,
crackers, and a glass of champagne out by the pool. Sometimes informal
meals are truly the best!
