Once again, , thank you so much for you reply. Opinions from fellow travellers are more valuable to me than what any guidebook can give. So I researched as to what to do if I went to BKK: Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun, Marble Temple, Jim Thompson, Klong ride, Siam Square area, Chattuchak Market, Walk along Khao Sarn, Walk Along Patong night market. Anything else? Should I skip any of the above considering I have 3 days? That jams in a lot for three days. It's doable, and I understand that some people like to travel that way, but you might consider cutting back the list somewhat. The Grand Palace (including the incredible Emerald Buddha), Wat Pho and the Klong ride should be your highest priorities. I would also recommend you go to at least one of the really high-rated Thai restaurants, consider having high tea at one of the old hotels like the Oriental, and maybe get a Thai massage. I would skip the markets unless you're actually looking to buy something, and skip Siam Square and Khao San (Khao San just has a bunch of cheap backpacker hotels, cafes and bars - it looks cool in the movie "The Beach", but there's really no reason to go there unless you want a dirt-cheap, very basic hotel room). I was also considering at staying at the Reflections hotel. Have you heard of it? No. I was on a very low budget and stayed on Khao San. And a guidebook really recommends eating at this food court at this mall called MBK? I don't know it. Any comments on that or any other specific places to eat? (Ilove all kinds of food). I really liked the street stall food in Bangkok. I can't remember specific restaurants I ate in, but most of them were in the Grand Palace area. If you want something besides Thai food, there's Chinatown and the Indian district Pahurat, both of which have very authentic examples of those cuisines. Pahurat also has a lot of Indian sweet shops. As what to do at night...I'm not looking for anything seedy.... but I read about this placed called the Bed and Supper Club and this placed called the "Dome". Have you been? If so did you like it? I don't think either of them were open when I went to Bangkok - in 2001. On this site, the reviews of Bed Supper Club are mostly very positive, with a few exceptions: http://www.worldsbestbars.com/city/bangkok/index.htm |

wrote in message ups.com... I'm travelling to Australia from Europe via Asia. This is my first time travelling outside of Europe and just want to get people's opinion as which of the above Asian cities should I visit on my 3-days stop over? Thanks in advance! Impossible question but.... I would quickly eliminate KL from consideration. A seriously boring place. Singapore is "easy" Few, if any, problems. Honest taxi drivers (the rarest commodity on Earth), spotless, great public transportation. A great Botanical Garden. Not the most exciting place but a good stop for a foodie. Hong Kong: Almost as easy as Singapore. Good public transportation and a very good airport (both are almost as good as Singapore's IMHO). Bangkok: Frustrating airport (from what I have read... I haven't been to the new one yet). Taxi drivers will rip you off but it is still cheap compared to what you are used to. Big, dirty, fun and exciting. Paul |

It's not as good as e.g. Hong Kong's, but it's really not too bad by developing world standards. Compared to the endless delays, scam artists, and administrative chaos you find in some airports... Taxi drivers will rip you off but it is still cheap compared to what you are used to. Just go to the official taxi stand instead of the taxi drivers who walk around the terminal trying to get passengers, and make sure they use the meter. I had no problem with taxi ripoffs - the trip from airport to Khao San Road was about $6, from the Oriental Hotel to the Thai boxing stadium was $4, and from the Grand Palace to Chinatown was $1. |
