One last question for the seasoned Samui traveller :-)

How easy is it for me to get from the Big Buddha Beach area to Chaweng

Beach
area for 7.30 a.m.? I found a diving school with good references but it's
the other side of the island and I'm unsure about taxis and the like. If I

The two places are about 5-7 kilometers apart from each others. No worries.
You can ride a songtaew (a sort of pickup taxi) or a hired motorbike.

Just curious - how easy is it to organise for a flight from Jakarta

to
Samui?

It should be just as easy to arrange as any other set of flights.

However,
Bangkok Airways has a monopoly to fly to Samui. They have (at least

for
some
dates) only one flight a day from Singapore and dozens of them from

Bangkok.

Bangkok Air has a monopoly to fly to Samui?? I flew there on

Malayasian.

On which flight?

I don't remember now, it was a couple of years ago, but I arrived on Koh
Samui around 11:30 pm, out of Singapore.

First of all I want to say that Bangkok Airways DO have a monopoly over
operations on Samui. In a case flights have been allotted to other companies
does not contradict with the fact. If you skimmed timetables of the
Malaysian Airways or Amadeus, you wouldn't find regular Malaysian flights
toSamui. There are two weekly flights from KL to Samui by a company called
Berjaya Air (on Thursdays and on Sundays).

Perhaps what I should have said in my first post was to ask this question:

When did Bangkok Air get the monopoly?

Like I said, it was a couple of years ago that I flew on Malaysia Air out of
Singapore. Apparently, things have changed. Too bad.

When they BUILT the airport.

It doesn' matter.

Well, that doesn't make any sense then. I definitely did not arrive in Koh
Samui on Bangkok Air.

Yes it does make sense. As I said befo that some flights are operated by
companies other than Bangkok Airways is not anyhow contradictory to the
fact that Bangkok Airways has a monopoly on the Samui Airport operations.
They OWN the airport.

Yes, plenty of ATMs about but very expensive. To withdraw =A3150

worth I was
charged =A38 by my bank in the UK (RBS).

Ouch !! I've used ATMs in Thailand for the last 2 years, and my bank
(LloydsTSB) charges =A32.50 . . . . Maybe you should look at changing

your
bank?

Suggest you both change banks. My bank absorbs any ATM fees from other
banks. I pay nothing. I've used Thai ATMs for a decade and never paid a
cent in fees.
