Default Ponche Crema

On our Southern Caribbean cruise last month we discovered a wonderful
liqueur on Margarita Island called "Ponche Crema." We bought a bottle to
bring back but unfortunately it broke on the plane.

Fortunately, our good friends did the EXACT same cruise we did two weeks
later and they were kind enough to pick up a bottle and they packed it
properly so it survived the trip.

From what I can see on Google, "Ponche Crema" seems almost to be a
national drink of Venezuela. Kind of like a high-octane egg nog. If
anyone gets the chance, try some if you make it to Venezuela or
Margarita Island. Due to the close proximity, it wouldn't surprise me
if it were available on the ABC islands as well (Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao).

This is the official website for the commercially prepared drink (but
it's so far only in Spanish): http://www.ponchecrema.com/

This page explains how you can whip up a batch of your own (since I've
never seen it sold in the States):

Salud!

Default Ponche Crema

I am originally from Venezuela. Ponche Crema has been around for decades
in Venezuela. It is very well described as an alcohol base egg nug. I
believe that the original owners and creators of the drink are of European
descendent (I beleve from Spain). I have been told that it is a very well
protected "secret" formula (something like Coke) that only very few people
have access to it... It is very popular in Christmas time. I think the
alcohol may be a form of rum.

The recipe at http://www.pastrywiz.com/archive/ponche.htm calls for rum
or brandy. Based on what it tasted like to me, I'd go with the Rum.
Heck, everything ELSE from that part of the world seems to revolve
around rum so it's a logical assumption to make! :-)

I forget the name but there is a wine and fine liquor store on the upper
west side of Manhattan. If you have friends in NYC ask them to scope
the store out. They may carry it or be able to get it. That way, if
you are close enough you can get replacement bottles.

I'll do a little research. Thanks for the tip!
