Default EWR-AMS KLM vs LH

I plan to fly EWR-AMS for a trip to Rotterdam in November. I am familiar
with LH services and find it acceptable for this route. LH flies
EWR-FRA-AMS and return. KLM flies nonstop. How does their service compare
with LH? This will be low fare economy.

In my experience, service in Y class on LH and KL is very similar. If the
price is about the same, I would take the direct flight. Flying via FRA
would be some 3 hours more in total travel time each way.

Probably about the same.

Your issue should be the time wasted on the connection versus the extra time
and hassle in US Customs when they see that you are arriving from Amsterdam.

There is no extra time nor hassle at any customs wherever in the world for a
traveller arriving from Amsterdam via Frankfurt compared to the same
traveller arriving directly from Amsterdam.
