Default Rhapsody of the Seas - question

Greetings. My wife and I will be sailing on RCI's "Rhapsody of the
Seas" departing March 26, 2006 from Galvaston. We've been on one other
cruise before. We last cruised with Carnival back in 2000 and very
much enjoyed the experience.

A question about RCI and this ship... Is the room service "free"?
When we were on Carnival, it wasn't until our last few days that we
realized that room service was essentially free of charge (minus tip).
We certainly won't be using room service often since the restaurants
sound very good, but we are curious about this.

Thanks in advance! ...and you have any tips on how to help make our
cruise a hoot, let me know.

PS - I really enjoyed reading the review of "Rhapsody of the Seas" from
Peri on Januaruy 27, 2006.

ALL room service on RCL ships is completely free. Just tip the waiter when
he brings your order.
The room service menu isn't all that extensive, but it's invaluable if you
get the munchies at silly O'clock in the morning!

Enjoy

From the "Maybe You Didn't Know This" Department.....

The person who hauls that BLT and a brownie to you at 2 AM possibly
volunteered to do that. On many ships, crew members volunteer to deliver
room service orders when they are off duty in hopes of picking up a few
extra dollars in tips. I find it easy to be generous to these people.

Default Rhapsody of the Seas - question

Hi:

On my last cruise, I took a pile of $2 bills with me and some
individually wrapped Russel Stover candy. Each day, I left a $2 bill
and a piece of candy for my room steward with a note saying "thank you
for (whatever)--filling my six-pack cooler with ice when he serviced the
cabin, bringing me fresh wine glasses because I would fill the ones in
the cabin before dinner leaving it somewhere, keeping the cabin so nice,
whatever little "extra" I could think of. I also took two bills to
the dining room along with pieces of candy for the waiter and bus boy
every evening. Funny thing, they always thanked me graciously for the
candy and not the bucks (lol). Anyway, I don't know if it "bought" me
anything but it was money I was going to give them anyway as we always
give them an extra tip at the end of the cruise. Since, on this
particular cruise, they were all very good, we still gave the steward
extra and likewise the bus boy and waitress.

If you want to build up your frequent flier/rebate account, you can
"charge" money on your sail pass in the casino at no cost and you don't
have to gamble it.

Tucker in Texas (who doesn't want to hear what a cheapskate she is for
taking a glass of home imported wine to the dining room each evening to
enjoy with dinner. If they charged a reasonable price, she would buy it.
But she has a problem paying $7 for a glass of wine which is aboutwhat
a whole bottle costs at the corner whiskey store)

Regarding the passing of $2.00 bills for tips:

Believe it or not, a handful of people even in America don't realize
that there is a legal tender $2.00 bill. Many people below the age of
25 have never even seen one. It's possible...though a stretch...but
possible...that they've never seen a $2.00 bill and weren't entirely
sure if you were trying to be funny or not by passing "phony cash"

Many people consider the $2 bill to be unlucky.

I have a $2 Silver Certificate that my grandmother gave me about 40
years ago. I should probably get it appraised for insurance purposes.

So how much should you tip room service? Should you tip more in the
night time and late night/early morning than in morning and afternoon time?
The first cruise I went on I did not use room service. My last cruise I
ordered a couple of pieces of pizza around 12am; I wanted to hit the casino
again. About fifteen or twenty minutes later a gal came up with not two but
three pieces of pizza and French fries. I tipped her four dollars. I was
told tho by others that have cruised a lot more than me that I should have
tipped no more than two dollars.

What was it worth to you? How much would you have tipped at a hotel,
for what would likely be a $25 "snack"?
