Discount carriers

I have never flown domestic in the US before and I need to travel from New
York the 2. of June and back around the 20th. I tried South West and
Jetblue, but they either don't fly from New York (South West) or land in
Phoenix (Jetblue). What other discount carriers are there in the US or do I
have to use a regular airline? How much must I expect to pay?

You don't need to restrict your search to discount carriers, as the
major carriers will match the price of the discount carriers up to
perhaps a week before the flight, when the major carriers tend to become
more expensive. However, even then you need to check the majors, since
if the discount carriers' flights are becoming full, they will jack
their prices up as well.

One advantage of the discount carriers is that they often have less
restrictive ticketing conditions, making it easier to change flights
after you have been ticketed.

That said, you can try this web site to get an idea of the airlines,
schedules, and fares. You can't buy tickets, but it allows you to check
for available seats and fares:

The only airline not included is Southwest, which you have to search for
in their web site.

You don't need to register on the ITA site, just log in as a "guest".
As a hint, use "NYC" to check for flights from all three New York
airports. LGA, EWR or JFK will get you flights from those airports
alone.

You don't want to attempt a transfer between EWR and either of the other
two airports, so don't plan on such a connection. LGA - JFK is about a
30 to 45 minute bus trip, and is worth it if the flight price is right.
Otherwise, try to stick with the airport you will arrive at or be near.

Using the above site, the fares are typically between $250 and $300,
round trip, if you buy now. These fares include all taxes, if you
purchase them separately from your international tickets. If you buy a
combined ticket, there is some reduction in taxes.

Airlines that fly non-stop between New York and Phoenix include
American, America West, and Continental. American flies from JFK
airport, and the others from Newark. There are many other airlines with
one connection along the way, and which have similar fares.

NYC to Phoenix is your flight plan? Try America West.

Other options if America west is sold out:

1) Check out pricing on JetBlue from NYC to San Diego and then
Southwest/America West from San Diego to PHX.

2) Find your way to NY Islip or Philadelphia and then fly Southwest.


A few other low cost airlines in the US to maybe check out: Ted, Song,
Frontier, ATA, Airtran.

I was very busy today so I ended up letting my travel agent do all the work.
I got a KLM flight Oslo-Amsterdam- New -York for about 450$ (a good price
from Norway) and America West from New York to Phoenix for about 340$. The
domestic part of the trip was a little more expensive than expected maybe,
but it was important to me that I got a very late depature from Phoenix.

(By the way, I'm spending a few days in New York when I fly in and out, so
it doesn't matter that it's two different airliens.)
