Default Flying is a sin - Bishop of London

Telegraph Sunday July 29

Non essential flying is a symptom of sin, says Rev Chartres,
Bishop of London.
Nicholas Crane, walker and travel writer has vowed never to fly
again, due to the depletions of ozone layer, carbon emissions and
effects of vapour trails on the upper atmosphere. Meanwhile the
EU moves towards taxation and carbon capping of air travel. Crane
believes that we have less than 10 years left, if its not already
too late
Crane now travels around UK by train and writes about the
subsequent walks around our coasts. OK if you have the fitness.
Where does it leave us? Clearly long haul flights to sit a beach
much like one near home is obscene. But no more Venice, no more
sunny costas, no more second homes in the Algarve? Back to
Brighton in the drizzle, Blackpool in the rain?

Hmm, I would be wary of assuming the accuracy of reporting any theological
statement by someone who refers to the Rt Revd and Rt Hon Richard Chartres,
Lord Bishop of London, as "Rev Chartres". I've just finished a three-year
stint on the London Diocesan Synod, and can assure you that it's unlike that
+Richard would say anything so crude as "flying is a sin". He did recently
encounter some flak over his own travelling when he spent Easter on a cruise
as a lecturer rather than presiding over ceremonies in his cathedral!

But no more Venice, no more
sunny costas, no more second homes in the Algarve? Back to
Brighton in the drizzle, Blackpool in the rain?

Maybe the Torygraph should introduce its hacks to The Man in Seat 61.

xpost didnt work, lets try again, adding more of what he actually
said.

Non essential flying is a symptom of sin, says Rev Chartres,
Bishop of London.

“Making selfish choices such as flying on holiday or buying a
large car are a symptom of sin,” he declared. “Sin is not just a
restricted list of moral mistakes. It is living a life turned in
on itself where people ignore the consequences of their actions.”
In an interview on Tuesday’s BBC Radio Four Today programme
Chartres elaborated on his comments from The Times interview.
Asked to clarify if he was saying that using a plane to fly
somewhere on holiday was a sin, Chartres said he accepted that
some large families need large cars and some people live in the
countryside, saying it was an individual choice and that it was a
call first to the Church of England’s own members.
He said, however, that the Christian concept of sin had “shrunk
too small”.
“Well I think the language of sin has sometimes been shrunk too
small. The language of sin is absolutely right as we look at our
responsibility as people living in what we believe to be a
creation, the responsibility to their neighbours, especially the
poor of the world, and our responsibility to our wellbeing.

Nicholas Crane, walker and travel writer has vowed never to fly
again, due to the depletions of ozone layer, carbon emissions and
effects of vapour trails on the upper atmosphere. Meanwhile the
EU moves towards taxation and carbon capping of air travel. Crane
believes that we have less than 10 years left, if its not already

subsequent walks around our coasts. OK if you have the fitness.

While that reverend may not have said it properly, he has a very valid
point and one which may see growth in air travel severely curtailed.

Air travel accounts for a non trivial proportion of pollutants. Tonnes
and tonnes of fuel are burned and that releases tonnes and tonnes of
pollutants including CO2.

Airlines will eventually be given/sold pollution quotas and they will
have to either curtail growth, or charge passengers for the cost of the
pollution credits. Now matter how you look at it, air travel will become
more expensive. And you may not see football fans hop on a ryannair or
easyjet plane just to be present at a football match for one afternoon
and come home to the wife hopefully not too drunk.

For Boeing and Airbus, it also has serious implications because not only
woudl this curtail growth in the market, but may also change fleet
compositions and both manufacturers would have to fight for fleet
replacement. The only possible growth would come with extremely more
efficient aircraft.

It won't happen in the next couple of years. But within a decade, you
will start to feel such restrictions on discretionary travel. Air Travel
may return to its 1960s status where it was considered really special.

and in the worst place, up high. Its all out of control, massive
car growth in India and China (India's biggest producer now they
said on radio). Even if countries like UK meet targets its
swallowed up by Chinese growth or air traffic growth in a few
months. Then there's the US in denial....

Were all doomed!

A "symptom" of sin, rather than actual sin?

What sin is it a symptom of?

What a sinner the previous pope was! All that flying... He probably
thought that his travels were essential.
