A few years ago I read in a guide book that tourists should avoid the Bois
de Boulogne at night as there was an inherent danger from Brazilian
transvestites who congregated there. Does the same hold true today?

I don't see what a tourist could visit in the Bois de Boulogne at night.
It is a large gloomy forest. West suburbs residents can cross it to reach
St Cloud or Sevres. Its bad reputation at night was already mentionned in
the general Rossignol memoirs shortly after the french revolution. There
is absolutely no problem in the daylight and even at dawn in most parts of
the wood.

Many sports clubs are there tennis, rugby, horses clubs, horses race
field, boating on a false canal, a small zoo for children, Musée des
traditions populaires (traditional way of living museum) and the
tulip-rose garden of Bagatelle really worth the visit during the spring,
very pleasant tea room and typical french restaurant inside.
