Hong Kong advice
Hi,
I am travelling to Hong Kong next. It's not my first time there, and I do know my way around. This time I am looking for tips to explore more the off-beaten tracks of Hong Kong, the hinterland if you want. ;-) Are there any (small) tours offered where one gets to know the "real" Hong Kong? I am looking for something individual, like tea ceremony, Feng Shui architecture, life in the New Territories, walking tours, etc. Oh, one last question: Where can I find the timetable for the Airport express and the departure times of the hotel shuttles? -- Nick H. niko25at "at" yahoo "dot" de |

Sure you don't want to go to China? Yes. ;-) Been to China on other occasions. Maybe you should go to the horse races or go gambling in Macau or try to steal a cab when it starts to rain. That's "real" HK too. Macau has been on my list for the last 3 times I've been to HKG. *lol* Horse racing is a good idea. -- Nick H. niko25at "at" yahoo "dot" de |

"Macau has been on my list for the last 3 times I've been to HKG.
*lol*" Macau is well worth seeing, but more for its colonial architecture, markets, and excellent restaurants (many of which serve a Portuguese-Asian fusion cuisine known as "Macanese" cuisine) than for its casinos. Since the vast majority of Macau's visitors are Hong Kong residents on weekend gambling trips, hotels are much more expensive on friday and saturday nights and are deeply discounted the rest of the time. If you stay over on a sunday through thursday night, you can stay in a four-star (not five-star) hotel for only US $40 per night. I would highly recommend this, since a day trip really isn't enough to really see Macau. Some other ideas of off-beaten-track stuff: explore the first floor of the Chungking Mansions, check out some of the markets aimed at locals not tourists - like the Graham Street market, traditional craft shops in Yau Ma Tei (the craft stores in Sheung Wan are more touristy). |

Yes, I should say (being back from HKG) that the suggestion of the walking tours was perfect. I didn't go to Macao, saving this for the next time. *lol* Cheap places ... well, Nathan Road offers lots of cheap places but be prepared to share your bed with bugs. :-) Otherwise, look out for any special offers and avoid times of conferences, etc. I stayed at the Novotel in Wanchai. A friend of mine stayed at the Ramada and got very cheap rates. -- Nick H. niko25at "at" yahoo "dot" de |
