Tassie's Zeehan & Queenstown panned as "ugly" by speeding scribbler for new magazine. {Re-sending}
(Herewith my second attempt to re-send with the addition of
rec.travel.australia+nz. My first effort to re-send, a few minutes ago, produced nothing but white space for the body of the message. Usenet has a mind of its own.) Tennis writer Suzi Petkovski probably didn't even give herself time to find a half-decent court in either Zeehan or Queenstown when she sped through (in her words she "floored it" through Zeehan) both "ugly" west-coast Tasmanian towns in March this year while skimming some shallow feelings from that world-famous region for her story headed "See it or flee it" in the suspicious first ("June 2005") edition of the Sydney-based monthly magazine _Australian Traveller_. Is she from the USA? She talks of Zeehan as having "trailer-park town planning", and of Queenstown as "a shoo-in" for Australia's "most butt-ugly town". The ostentatiously US-hack nature of her writing is a cert for some sort of award. Any ideas, anyone? Meanwhile, please give her a wide berth on the roads. She'll probably be passing through another intolerably ugly part of Australia. -- Arfur Moo |

announced to an awaiting world : Is she from the USA? She talks of Zeehan as having "trailer-park town planning", and of Queenstown as "a shoo-in" for Australia's "most butt-ugly town". I spent 3 weeks in QT in March whilst spending several hours there during a bus change, traveling Strahan to Hobart. One of the party famously claimed "Why would you live in Queenstown when suicide is an option ?". Very run down, almost deserted (was a Saturday), mostly trailer-trash types buying beer, and closed businesses everywhere. Also misplaced my mobile there at the time and the ******* who found it hasn't contacted me (had my contact details enclosed). DS |

But it DOES have the now re-furbished West Coast Wilderness Railway (to Strahan, and operated by Federal Hotels), which is a growing tourist-puller..... DS |

Rachel Miller, of Zeehan's three-and-a-half-star Heemskirk Motor Hotel, said Australian Traveller journalist Suzi Petkovski - who compiled the list - must not have left her car. http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=51073 The list of the Top 10 "Must See" and the Top 10 "Drive Through Towns" as reported: http://www.etravelblackboard.com/ind...av=21&id=38449 Cath |

as reported: http://www.etravelblackboard.com/ind...av=21&id=38449 Oh, my god, see this list. I saw some of the "Must See" and "Drive Through Towns" during my two australia visits 1993 and 1998 (including Zeehan and Queenstwon). Hahndorf...well...I saw Hahndorf as a time-document of german immigrants as I saw Queenstown as a time-document of tasman mining history. And: we drove through Hahndorf with just 2 hours stop there and we spend one night at wonderfull Queenstown Empire Hotel. |

That's water over the dam that never was. Electric Eric and his disciples are now history. Tasmania and its inhabitants have moved on. PS: Pedder will live again! -- Arfur Moo |
