In general, I agree that you need to have a "decent" amount of storage
available to you.

However...

Nothing and noboby requires them to buy 20GB in cards today!
Buy a one or two GB card just for this trip.

...the question of "How much storage is enough?" is dangerous to
generalize when you known nothing about the person, for it ultimately
depends on:

a) the specifics of one's equipment,
b) the photographer's shooting preferences & subjects,
c) photographer's workflow (where/when culling takes place),
d) how many hours/days/weeks worth of storage between downloads,
e) other factors /constraints

I shoot a roll per dive. At raw, as you point out, that's a card.

For (a), the example I gave was for how RAW file formats eats up
storage.

When I shoot my film camera with ASA 100, I'm getting about 19 Mp. I
would expect similar perfomance from a good dSLR (which I'm going to
have to break down and buy, sigh).

For (b), wildlife subjects can result in rapid bursts to try to capture
action which eats up storage. Don't be surprised to meet a dSLR'er who
has burned through 2GB in less than 10 minutes. Using the movie mode on
a P&S eats up space quickly too.

Each year, at the USGP, I shoot a roll of film in a matter of seconds
at the start of the race. 5 fps gives me about 7 seconds to get the
whole field trying to go four wide through turn 1. Turns out to be
just about right. But that's a lot, regardless of film or digital.

For (c), Some people prefer to wait until they get home; YMMV.

IMO, (d) can be a huge factor. At only 300 images per day with an 8MP
dSLR shooting RAW, you'll go through 4GB of media....per day. If you
can only backup every other day, then you need 8GB to tide you over.
And so forth.

For (e), its typically weight and power restrictions (an Alaskan fly-in
camp with 25lb total weight limit, etc) that limit your ability to
carry your own backup options. Sure, flash media is small and light,
but buying a lot of it does get expensive: I priced it out for one
Alaska trip and I would have needed $3000 worth, but that was a few
years ago: today, it would only cost around $1000.

Do what I did with my low end camera...

Been there, done that. Learned my lesson by running out (with only a
4MP camara) and ended up having to go find an electroncis store &
paying top price to buy more. IMO, its almost always cheaper to buy at
home because you can selectively wait for sales, rebates, etc.

We have a 128 MB stick and a 256 MB stick for Carol's Sony. Used to
be plenty. Then she bought a housing. At least now I have a lousy
buddy to be a lousy buddy with. We've become real SOBs.

I was trying not to entirely expose you. Guilt rules, though.

Now go put DaddyHaber back in his room. He's out and he's not properly
medicated.........again.

Guilt? For one note written a year and a half ago? Hardly. Time to let it
go and move on, Michelle.

Just thought you should spell the girl's name correctly.

As I see you have. Just remember the next time you lecture anyone on Usenet
about how they post, you're nothing more than a TROLL with a hypocrite for
a friend.

"Stephanie", right? It was your TROLL name, you got to be right.
