Canada question
I'm making some flash cards for my daughter that has all of the US
states and Canadian Provinces on them. I would also like to include the nickname of the Provinces and the year they entered the dominion, but I have not been able to find this information on the web. Below is what I have been able to find. Any help would be appreciated. Name Capital Nickname Date Alberta Edmonton Strong and Free 1905 British Columbia Victoria Manitoba Winnipeg New Brunswick Fredericton Loyalist Province July 1st, 1867 Newfoundland/Labrador St. John's The Rock Northwest Territories Yellowknife Nova Scotia Halifax Nunavut Iqaluit 04/01/99 Ontario Toronto July 1st, 1867 Prince Edward Island Charlottetown Garden Province 1873 Quebec Quebec City The Beautiful Province 1867 Saskatchewan Regina Land of Living Skies 1905 Yukon Whitehorse |

Below is what I have been able to find. Any help would be appreciated. Name Capital Yukon Whitehorse Nickname Date "The Yukon" "I'm not positive on the dates, but think that Yukon first became a 'district' of the NWT in 1897, then a separate territory in 1898" Regarding the nickname, a discussion of Yukon, Yukon Territory, and *The* Yukon may still create controversy among the Northerners. Canada question
the nickname of the Provinces
Here's something: http://www.canadaproject.ecsd.net/pr...rial_trivi.htm And here's a little something else: "Most of the provinces have a little motto on their plates, however I think only Manitoba (Friendly Manitoba) and BC have little things like that. Ontario is "Yours to Discover", Quebec "Je me souviens" (I remember), Nova Scotia has "Canada's Atlantic Playground", Alberta is "Wild Rose Country", "Land of Living Skies" on Saskatchewan's plates, PEI has a picture and capiton of the Confederation Bridge, Yukon has "The Klondike", North West Territories and Nunavut both have "Explore Canada's Arctic" and Newfoundland and Labrador is "a world of difference" New Brusnwick has nothing. http://forums.govteen.com/archive/in...p/t-90508.html |

Canada question
Newfoundland and Labrador joined the Confederation in 1949 (by a margin of 7
votes). Prior to that, it was a British dominion/colony same as Canada and Australia. news Alberta Edmonton Strong and Free 1905 'Round here it's more often refered to as The Texas of Canada, most people would probably assume S&F to be a reference to the USA. British Columbia Victoria Isn't one of their tourist slogans Beautiful British Columbia? Manitoba Winnipeg Dunno about the province, but its capital goes by the name Winterpeg, at times. Newfoundland/Labrador St. John's The Rock 1949. I could be wrong but it's my understanding that "The Rock" only refers to the island. Another name I've heard is "The Granite Planet". Nova Scotia Halifax 1867. Quebec Quebec City The Beautiful Province 1867 Umm... You're going to have to teach her some French, it's La Belle Province, I've never heard it translated before. Richard |

A margin of 7 votes? It was a close race to be sure, but not that close. In percentages, the results were (rounded off) 52% in favor of joining Canada and 48% opposed. As far as I know, all the votes were counted! One other small correction. From 1933-1949, Newfoundland was run by a Commission of Government (there were no elections during that period). Prior to 1933, it was a British dominion/colony same as Canada and Australia. Elizabeth www.ucs.mun.ca/~emiller |
