I believe St Helens is an active volcano? From my post of March 3 in this thread: Mt St. Helens . . . resumed activity a couple of days ago. Can you tell me somehting about the BC museum please? Although it isn't called that, it's a museum of local anthropology. It's beautifully done; truly first class. I wouldn't miss it! Portland is famous for roses It's The City of Roses. The rose gardens are near the middle of town. -- __________________________________________________ ______________ One of (as of 2003) 751,682 residents of San Francisco. http://geocities.com/dancefest/ --- http://geocities.com/iconoc/ ICQ: http://wwp.mirabilis.com/19098103 ------- IClast at Gmail com [Content below asterisks not mine.] ************************************************** ***************** .. *** Free account sponsored by SecureIX.com *** *** Encrypt your Internet usage with a free VPN account from http://www.SecureIX.com *** |

It's an easy walk to Seattle Center where you can catch the monorail to downtown where most of the museums, the public market, and other attractions are located. The monorail is out of commission for the foreseeable future. |

The driver will be my husband who has driven quite a lot in the USA - last time 1999. We drove from Orlando to Ohio (visiting friends and golf courses en route!) and on a number of Interstates. He is quite good at the "other side of the road" as it happens. You're good then. We live in a very large city with motorways in and out. Traffic here goes at around 100 mph on motorways Now you have *me* scared. (did you mean kilometers? I have no wish to drive 100 miles per hour when I visit NZ next year) I certainly realise 8-9 days is not ideal. ... I guess it's all about what interests one has. We were recommended Seattle as a very interesting maritime city, and Victoria Island and the famous gardens there as not to be missed. Actually the town of Victoria is on the island of Vancouver (but Vancouver city is on the mainland). And if you still need a bit more confusion, there's a small town of Vancouver in Washingtion state, USA. Thanks for the info. I hope one day you may visit our country - which has wonderful natural scenery and actually can be done in 8-9 days! Oh well, size and distance is the thing, isn't it? We're already starting to plan for about a year forward. We;re thinking of 6 or 8 *weeks* to see NZ. (I hope we won't miss anything ;-) John |

My husband and I are looking to travel from
San Francisco to Seattle ... Is there a bit problem with Amtrack? Trains are used mostly for freight in the U.S. There are several reasons, but one is distance. The U.S. is much larger than European countries, so travel time becomes a big factor and people tend to fly instead. The distance between SF and Seattle is about the same as the distance between London and Vienna, Austria. Jim |

It seems to me I heard somewhere that Daisy wrote in article

Portland itself is an interesting city and deserves at least a day, then another day for the drive out the Columbia River Gorge for the waterfalls. On the way up to Seattle you will have an opportunity to visit Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Rainier, though if you're not interested in nature parks I'm not sure these would attract you. [. . .] Victoria has the great BC museum and of course Butchart Gardens. You may want a couple of days there. Can you tell me somehting about the BC museum please? We had planned on visiting the gardens. I also understand Victoria Island is quite scenic and different. Vancouver likewise is worth at least two or three days depending on your interests. Cities for us are art galleries and museums - or public gardens - historic sites. Non-responsive to your question, but if time allows you could take the ferry from VI to Squamish (was it?) and ride the historic train back down to Vancouver (if it's still running--we did that in 1986 and enjoyed the adventure, the bit of history, and the scenery). -- Don Kirkman |

I also understand Victoria Island is quite scenic and different. In case it helps you with future research: you mean Vancouver Island. Victoria is on Vancouver Island, and Vancouver isn't (it's on the mainland). There is also a separate, smaller city of Vancouver, in Washington State across the river from Portland, Oregon. Both cities and the island are named after the same explorer, of course -- the big Vancouver was so named because it was *near* Vancouver Island and this helped people in eastern Canada to know where the new city was. There is also an actual Victoria Island in Canada, but it's in the Arctic. -- Mark Brader "The world little knows or cares the storm through Toronto which you have had to pass. It asks only if you brought the ship safely to port." -- Joseph Conrad My text in this article is in the public domain. |

One sideswiped another at Westlake Center where the tracks are too close to each other (design flaw). They are running shuttle buses between Westlake and Seattle Center. Forget Queen Anne's Larry's - come on over to West Seattle and check out the Metropolitan Market! |
