Carnival Cruise Lines fined over documents, notification

The Associated Press
CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands
Carnival Cruise Lines was fined $65,000 and two of its ships were turned
away from St. Thomas and San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Tuesday due to a
computer glitch, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

Miami-based Carnival also allegedly failed to notify officials in
advance of their arrival.

The Carnival Glory was delayed from docking in St. Thomas for four hours
and Carnival was fined $32,500 because it hadn't sent Coast Guard
officials documents listing names of passengers and crew, along with the
ship's last five ports of call, said Lt. Eric Willis, a Coast Guard
spokesman.

Carnival spokesman Vance Gulliksen said the computer system, which
normally sends out the documents several days ahead of time, had broken
down. He said it had since been repaired and Glory's 3,500 passengers
would be given extra time in St. Thomas to make up for the delay.

The 950-foot ship arriving from Nassau, Bahamas, was ordered back to
international waters - 12 miles out to sea - until Coast Guard officials
could examine the security documents, Willis said.

The ship was due to arrive in the U.S. Caribbean territory at 9 a.m. but
did not dock until after 1 p.m.

Carnival was fined another $32,500 when its ship Victory failed to
notify the Coast Guard within 24 hours of its scheduled 5 p.m. arrival
in San Juan, Willis said. Coast Guard officials examined the Victory's
documents to determine everything was in order, he said.

Neither Gulliksen nor Willis could immediately say if the computer
breakdown had affected other Carnival ships entering U.S. ports.

A lie or a massive screwup. Or both. They have redundancy built in.
