Eastern Black Sea offers many tourism alternatives

The eastern Black Sea region offers its visitors
various tourism alternatives. Besides trekking,
rafting and jeep safaris, the area is preferred by
vacationers because of its warm summer climate

ISTANBUL - TDN with wire dispatches

The eastern Black Sea region, which has recently
drawn interest from foreign tourists for its warm
summer climate, offers many of options for
visitors, including festivities that are held on a
different plateau every weekend and bullfights in
the city of Artvin.

The world-famous Sumela Monastery in Trabzon,
whose history dates back to the 13th century, is
usually the first place in the region to be
visited by tourists. The monastery, positioned on
a steep hill at the foot of Karadag Mountain in
Macka district's Altindere village, is also called
"Virgin Mary" by locals.

Another worthwhile place to see in the region is
Ataturk Mansion, where the founder of the Turkish
Republic Mustafa Kemal Ataturk stayed during his
visits to Trabzon in 1934 and 1937. The mansion
was later turned into a museum. The Hagia Sophia
and Trabzon museums are also definitely worth a
visit.

The ideal place for those who would like to
spend a holiday in the natural environment of the
eastern Black Sea is Uzungol. Around 99 kilometers
from Trabzon, Uzungol offers options like
trekking, bird watching, botanical tours, and visits
to plateaus like Sekersu, Demirkapi and Yaylaonu.

There are areas available for trekking and jeep
safaris on almost all the plateaus in Trabzon.
Travel agencies organize tours to all districts of
the city. Additionally the Turkish Foundation for
Combating Soil Erosion, for Reforestation and the
Protection of Natural Habitats (TEMA) and other
mountaineering clubs organize weekend tour
programs.

Downhill skiing and rafting in Rize

The Kackar Mountains, always a very popular
place for mountaineering buffs, since 2005, have
become a great attraction for those interested in
heliskiing - downhill skiing that is accessed by a
helicopter instead of a ski lift. Along with
Canada, Alaska, the Caucasus and the Himalayas,
Turkey's Kackar Mountains are one of the only
places in the world where heliskiing is possible,
drawing many people from around the world to the
district to take part in the rare activity.

The Firtina River is the place in the region for
white-water rafting, though there are also two
rafting courses on the Iyidere River in Ikizdere
district.

Activities like trekking and jeep safaris are
organized on the plateaus in southern parts of
Rize. Outdoor jogging is ideal for those trying to
escape from the stress of daily life. Ayder
Plateau in Camlihemsin district is an eye-catching
destination, with high hills and forests. The
plateau is famous for its spring resorts and
serves tourists throughout the year. Kackar
National Park, covering an area of 550 hectares,
is the habitat of the "mountain rooster" and Asian
chamois, found only in the eastern Black Sea
region.

The region's city Artvin is known for its
bullfights. There is a bullfighting festival in
the city almost every weekend, which is the main
reason the city draws so much attention from
tourists.

The Coruh River, the city's most important
river, draws many local and foreign tourists to
the region with its excellent white-water rafting.
Its 260-meter-long river provides opportunities
for rafting in four different laps.

with its traditional wooden Savsat houses and
unique views.

Artvin-Borcka Camili, or Macahel, is the first
region in Turkey declared part of the U.N. culture
body's Human and Biosphere Reserve Project. The
region is extremely rich in biological diversity,
as there are only 482 conservation areas in the
world of its scope.

Giresun Island

Giresun Island, which is home to many types of
birds, including seagulls and cormorants, is the
only island in the eastern Black Sea region where
humans are able to survive. Covering an area of
40,000 square meters, the island has an
observation tower, huge wine barrels and historic
remnants, including ancient city walls. The
island's ancient name is Aretias.

Additionally, the Kumbet, Kulakkaya and Bektas
plateaus, which were declared Giresun's tourism
spots 13 years ago, draw interest from tourists
because of their natural beauty and plateau
festivals. Giresun's plateaus are also very
popular among trekking buffs.

Karaca Cave in Gumushane

Karaca cave, which is 17 kilometers away from
Gumushane, is located in Torul district's Cebeli
village. The 105-meter-long cave covers an area of
1,500 square meters. There are stalactites,
stalagmites, columns and travertine pools in the
cave.
