That seems fairly unlikely.

Who knows why.

I'm guessing your neighbour knows, and made the decision here, not a
lack of airline service. Even if there was a equipment failure, Dallas
is a big enough hub that there are plenty of choices to reroute as
needed.

Anything is possible, so I wouldn't go as far as to call said neighbour
a liar, but I'm having trouble imagining this happening, unless it was
on a charter flight or an airline without reciprocal routing agreements,
and I'm not sure that there are any of those flying between Dallas and
Canada.

Neither of us knows which airline she was travelling on or what type of
ticket. She travels back and forth a lot so she is no neophyte. Probably,
everything was booked. It was serious enough for her to phone me to get hold
of some of the neighbours to take care of things. It is easy for you to call
her liar when you weren't there and know nothing of the situation.

Or, put another way, I've flown in and out of Dallas from Canada more
times then I can recall, I've had equipment failures, missed flights,
etc and never waited more then 8 hours, and only ever that long because
it wasn't worth connecting 1-2 other airports only to arrive at my
destination at the same time anyway. Had a capacity been an issue,
there were many alternative reroute choices.

You don't know that.

If they were flying into a smaller Canadian airport without other
service to Dallas, they'd likely they'd get routed elsewhere into
Canada, between Dallas and Houston there are multiple airlines and
multiple flights daily into most major cities in Canada, at which point
Air Canada would take 'em home.

(I'm assuming your neighbour is Canadian, since they would otherwise be
a neighbor instead)

Where you could get the idea that the US
border service is easy. It is not.

Getting in to the US is a pain, getting out isn't nearly so bad. Canada
doesn't require a valid passport for Canadians to return home (although
you may want to expect some extra scrutiny / hassle when you do return),
your only hassle will be getting on a plane at all.

As far as the 6 months is concerned some
first nation countries demand at least 6 months left on a passport.

While true, for a Canadian -- US only trip, what other nations do
isn't particularly significant.

I agree, but he didn't understand why anyone would renew a passport before
it expired. He made rather rude remarks further showing his ignorance. There
are very good reasons to do so. Not all of us travel only to the US.

No. I wondered why anyone would want to throw away 6 months worth of
paid passport validity.

He made rather rude remarks further showing his ignorance.

What exactly was that comment?

There are very good reasons to do so.

Not in the current context (US/Canada travel).

Not all of us travel only to the US.

It's not clear why you had to extend the question beyond US/Canada
travel, which was the original point of the thread.
