Default Balcony on cold-weather itinerary?

Hi all. We are considering a fall cruise to Canada/New England and
can't decide between a significantly larger cabin with windows (no
balcony) or a smaller cabin with a balcony. The extra space would come
in very, very handy.

We had a balcony on a springtime cruise to central america and loved
it, but that was in warm weather. And I remember that it got pretty
darn cold on that balcony in the afternoons and nights because of the
wind. I remember trying to get some sun but it was too windy.

So I was wondering if anyone had any experience with a balcony on a
cold-weather cruise and whether you actually went outside and sat on
it. P.S. we do love cold weather. Thanks very much.

On a Norwegian Fjords cruise we were out there a lot, but there is not a
lot of wind in the fjords. I have had warm weather cruises where I hardly
used it becasue it was either too hot or too windy.

Canada New England in the fall is beautiful especially the St Lawrence. I
would go for it just for looking out in Quebec.

A lot of it has to do with itinerary. We were on a very, very small
ship in Alaska - no balcony cabins (I think 4 had private entrances
from the upper-most deck directly into the cabin). Had we had a
balcony, we would have been outside on it, regardless of the weather.
As it was, we spent hours on deck, freezing our butts off, but wouldn't
have missed a moment of it. I would imagine that it would be a similar
situation on your itinerary - too many beautiful things to see that
you'd probably miss, sitting inside (yes, you could look out a window,
but how much time will you really spend with your nose against the
glass?).

At lot depends on the layout of the cabin. I am looking at Silverseas (for
example) for around South America. Their windowed cabins have very large
window with a nice chair and table next to it. IMHO that is better than going
out on a cold veranda....
