Default when to book for travel over labor day

I am looking to fly PDX to ORF or MDW - just checked tix prices on
Orbitz and they want about $450 big ones - OUCH! Is it better to go
ahead and book now or wait to see if the prices drop?

I see no reason at this time to expect a price drop.
Fuel prices up and aren't expected to fall.
Airlines are increasing fares and can do so because the planes are
filling up. AA even announced that it would cut service in the summer to
keep fares up. Traditionally, fares headed downward in the summer due to
the change in the mix of business travelers and leisure travelers.

WN's not on Orbitz, and serves MDW from PDX with a number of non-stops, and
flights changing at MCI and STL. Southwest was showing an advanced purchase
RT at $300, going Friday, returning Tuesday...

From Southwest.com for PDX-MDW-PDX

Leaving Friday evening (9/1) Returning Monday evening or anytime on
Tuesday and the price could be as low as $217 (99 each way, plus fees)

How did you get $300?

When I looked, the website was showing the lowest as $150 each way. Your
visit confirms my claim that they adjust fares all the time, and certainly
first thing of a Central Time Zone morning.

I also found cheaper than 450 tickets on Orbitz, although it would not
be my site of choice to search fares.

With fuel prices what they are, I don't see fares coming down during the
summer. Check airlines like Southwest (which isn't on Orbitz) and also
check Frontier and America West/US Airways - with an advance purchase you
might be able to do a bit better. ..
