Hi,
We are looking forward to go to NYC from Oct. 9 to 11. We'll stay 2 nights.
As the accomodation is cheaper in some neighbourhoods, we would like to know
if it is quite convenient to stay in places like Jersey City, Hoboken,
Yonkers and to travel to Manhattan by train, bus or subway.

Thanks for your advises.

With only 2 nights you should stay in Manhattan. The little you
would save will be offset by travel time. You want every hour you
can squeeze out to enjoy Manhattan. Two nights in a Manhattan hotel
should not break your bank. This is a very short time to see New
York City. Make the most of it.

I don't think you'll save much. Check on Expedia, Orbitz, hotels.com or
the other travel web sites and I am sure you can find a hotel room in
Manhattan in your price range.

And what about Nort Bergen, NJ ? We can have a Super 8 Motel for around

$50
a night (including free parking). It's close to NJ Transit Bus Station.

And
for $2 o/w, we are only 15 minutes from NY Port Authority Terminal.

Thanks again for your help.

I know where that is located and it's fine if you're looking for a place to
sleep and not looking for anything else in the surrounding area.
It's close to transportation to NYC and it is cheap.

If you're looking for something really cheap, try the YMCA. They are
much closer than North Bergen, because they're right in midtown
Manhattan. They are clean, and attract a young international
clientele. The West Side Y has double rooms with private bath in the
$100 range, or with shared bath in the $80 range. The Vanderbilt Y has
no rooms with private baths, and their rooms have bunk beds instead of
double beds. The Vanderbilt rooms are in the $80 range for two people.
Both Y's have air conditioning and color TV in the rooms. The West
Side Y has slightly more transportation options in the vicinity.

There is also a Y in Harlem and one in Brooklyn, but these would be a
bit further away from midtown. However, they are also cheaper, and
either one would have more restaurants in the vicinity than North
Bergen.

There is also a HI hostel in upper Manhattan that is about $35 per
person, but I think the Y is a better bargain if there are two of
you.

I stayed in the Vanderbilt Y this spring and would be happy to stay
there again. I have also stayed in the youth hostel and found it quite
acceptable. However, next time I'm in New York I think I'll try the
Westside Y.
