Looking for ideas

Hi,

I will be visiting Australia in April as my daughter study in Sydney
and we have never been there.

We look for ideas for family trip, cheap in budget, but nice and unique
(easy going).

I guess we will spend about three days in Sydney itself, so have still
about 7 days to tour around.

We understand its huge place, have no will to see "as much as
possible", but we will be four people, so every flight becomes
something to consider.

Any ideas about visiting a place outside of Australia? Fiji?

Perhaps drive from Sydney to Melbourne via the coastal highway. Take say
three days stopping along the way.

Some of the BEST beaches in Australia and scenic as well. This would give
you 3 days in Melbourne to see their sights as well.

Or drive north to Brisbane - at least at the northern end of the trip the
water is warm enough for swimming.

Avoid easter travel for traffic and accommodation issues.

Cripes. Seven days don't give you much time. Sydney will take three full
days. Check out some of the beaches - Manly is my preference, and the
ferry ride there and back will give you as good a view of the outer
harbour as anything else. Walk across the Harbour Bridge for free on the
lower level - you can take a train back if you get weary - or spend a
hundred dollars plus on a spectacular walk up to the top of the arch.
Attend a performance at the Opera House, or just walk there and gape at
the after dark view. Visit Taronga Park for Aussie animals - another
ferry ride. Yum Cha in Chinatown - cheap and yummy.

Other places to visit in the four days. Canberra the national capital is
worth a day or two to see what a well-planned city looks like, as well
as visit the galleries and museums and Parliament House. It's only three
hours down the freeway, or a half-hour by plane. The Gold Coast if you
like beaches. Pick your time and you could have a couple of days in a
beachfront highrise for not a lot of money. That's a full day of driving
up the coast or an hour or so by plane.

As to places outside Australia. Fiji or New Zealand are obvious
candidates. Make sure you pick your destinations and then arrange
tickets ahead of time. If you have some flexibility in timing, a good
travel agent will be able to string your flights together so they don't
cost a lot extra and you won't have to backtrack. Australia has several
international airports, so consider arriving at or leaving from some
place other than Sydney.

Fiji is a great stop on the way to or from Australia. The people are warm and
friendly, the water and beaches are wonderful and generally the prices are
right. The only alternative I would recommend would be the Cook Islands.

The main issue will be flying there, as we will be 3-4, so flight

Are there international flights directly to Fiji? We live and come
from Hong Kong.

What about Tasmania, I saw quite cheap flight from Sydney going there,
how is it in April?

Delightful. Tour the chocolate factory and marvel over the ruins at Port
Arthur. Tiger snakes and Tasmanian devils at the zoo next door.
Salamanca Markets on Saturday mornings for souvenirs. Drive up to Mount
Wellington for an unforgettable view over Hobart. Magic place.
