Marseille - Long weekend
My partner and I were considering a short break in Marseille or Nice
(we live in the UK) because we have never been to the South of France and EasyJet do very low cost fares to those destinations. Which one would be the best to visit? We are into cafés, bars, walking around and generally exploring places. Not too bothered about shopping though. Any recommendations of other places in the area we could visit? Thanks Andrew |

I've been to both. |

Thanks Andrew Marseille itself is not as attractive for a holiday as Nice; however, the surrounding area has a lot to offer from the seaside experience of Cassis to the charming Aix en Provence the South of France is a great get away. If you need a more frenetic pace and a lot of people to make your break your own, then by all means go to Nice a place designed for those who quickly miss the bustle of large cities and like to vacation with others, (not a bad thing mind you, just a thing) |

We're probably going to do as you suggest and base ourselves in Nice and pick one other destination to visit. Thanks Andrew |

We spend a lot of time at our apartment about 1 hour from Marseille. I
find it great for history, beauty, art and great food and wine. Look at our website at http://www.mybeaucaire.com. We have a whole section on the site about the area at http://www.mybeaucaire.com/environs.html |

Any recommendations of other places in the area we could visit? Thanks Andrew I find Marseille fascinating, there is so much to do and explore. If you're looking for cafe's and bars you will not be dissapointed with the old harbour area. Its wholly multicultural and I think you'll find it cheaper than Nice. I must admit I was a touch worried before my 1st trip to Marseille, a few people "down the local" had mentioned that it was a bit rough, but from what I saw on a long weekend there it could not have been more different. We were treated like kings whilst there and the locals were super friendly and very generous. You can see some piccys here. http://atschool.eduweb.co.uk/brownie/france.html I've been to Nice as well, It's nice (heh), but I think Marseille is more of a human city where as Nice feels to me like an attraction than a living breathing city. -- Cheerz - Brownz http://www.brownz.org/ |
