Default Overnighting at airports?

Hello,

on our trips to the US, we will have 15- and 18-hour waits in the NYC
(JFK). We are intending to use these long waits for our benefit and see
the city.

However, we will still have to spend the night (between 0:00 and 6:00
AM) somewhere. Where would you recommend to spend the time: at the
airport or elsehwere? Overnighting at the airport seems quite dangerous
(because of thieves?), even though we will be two and can take shifts

But booking a hotel for several hours also seems not reasonable.

On the other hand, we cannot stroll around the city for 18 hours in the
row.

Any ideas? Thanks!
